Richard Teresi from “Ohh, That’s Rich”––on World Series Baseball and Demographic Politics

Forgottenman has made his blog private, but he sent this to me and I asked him if he would put it on my blog. It is so well-stated and well-presented. In spite of the fact that I am no follower of any sport, this brought me to tears. The commentator is Richard Teresi, who writes under the title, “Ohh—That’s Rich.”

Comment by Forgottenman:  2025 World Series, game 3 in L.A., going 18 innings, setting multiple records. (No, I didn’t watch – highlight reels only.) Lots of commentary, but THIS is the absolute best, most important commentary on that game I can imagine! Thanks, Rich!

Friendly Game

Friendly Game

You come to bat. I toss my pitch.
Convention dictates. It’s a bitch.
You note my sudden augmentation.
A loud crack signals your elation.

Over the fence with deadly aim.
You round the bases to loud acclaim.
Exploit the crowd’s ecstatic cheers.
This afternoon, you’ll buy the beers.

Prompts today are deadly, pitch, augmentation, exploit and convention.

Home Plate: Sweet Victory

It’s hot summer in the teeming city with tenements piled room-on-room. With narrow hallways and nonexistent grassy plots, where’s  a kid to play?

Home Plate: Sweet Victory

They’re playing baseball in the street again, forcing cars to wait,
restless in the intersection, ’til they see the fate
of the ball the bat just cracked, rising in the air
to land in someone’s flower pot or on the tenement stair.
They make such a brouhaha, loud boys and louder cars,
that Grandma rises up a bit to clutch at window bars.

It is a large commitment, for she can’t sit down again
without some help, but still she is attracted by the din.
Are car horns blaring  for the inconvenience or a homer?
The batter’s mad dash down the street and back a slight misnomer,
for first base is the red car and second base the yellow.
Cross the street and third base is the stair stoop of the fellow

who exits from his doorway, briefcase in his hand,
who seems in a great hurry and yet chooses to stand
to see the runner execute his skipping zigzag run
homeward toward the batter’s plate that holds a sticky bun.
Horns blaring as he executes his mission, ends his flight,
bends over, grabs his trophy, and takes his winning bite!

Prompt words today were play, intersection, commitment and brouhaha.

Jock Balk

Jock Balk

I’ve never climbed a mountain.
I don’t dive in the sea.
Sports are simply pastimes
that don’t agree with me.

I cannot bat or pitch or catch.
A baseball skill I lack;
and when I tried at tetherball,
it hit me in the back.

I flinched and ducked, then stood back up,
tried once more for the ball;
but when I missed, got hit again
and took another fall.

I ski a lot upon my back
and when I swim I sink.
The water I can handle well
is in my kitchen sink.

In grade school when we played those games
involving run and chase,
I was the last one chosen;
for I never won a race.

I did not shine at tennis,
nor at volleyball.
When it comes to doing sport,
I find I’ve flunked them all.

Bowling, golf and badminton,
croquet and racquetballing
are talents I just don’t possess.
They simply aren’t my calling.

I fear I lack the focus
to hit balls with stick or hand.
To me, it’s hocus-pocus.
I’d rather join the band.

In games that take sports prowess,
my teammates rave and rant
that I do not play kick-the-can,
but rather, kick-I-can’t.

Some people lacking talent,
coordination, speed—
simply choose spectator sports
to fill their sportly need.

But I don’t like watching football,
your soccer or your hockey;
and when it comes to horse racing,
I neither bet nor jockey.

I admit, at sports I am
the worst you’ve ever seen.
So stop expecting more of me.
I simply lack the gene!!
