Matin

Matin

What kind of a world
does a bird feel itself a part of
that prods it to such a joyous song
in celebration of her beauties?

Sun barely risen,
air crisp and cool,
not a breath of air stirs the
vibrant golden hibiscus
to cause the fall
of one palm-sized petal
onto the dew-damp grass below.

No clouds obscure
one puff of steam
rising from the distant volcano
that peeks over the
hills above the lake––
not one ripple on its calm surface.

I lie on my bed,
apart from this still morning,
making lists––

only a glimpse
of that bird’s world
on view through my window’s parted curtain,
as I listen to this constant oration
of its joy over being born
into this world.

I somehow in the editing erased the prompt for this poem and I can’t for the life of me remember what it was. If it strikes a chord with you and you think you know of a prompt it might have been written for, please put a link in comments. I am definitely losing it, folks!!!

Lifelessons

Lifelessons

My perception see-saws between wonderment and worry,
all our lovely world devoted to such hurry
that in the furious ruckus, much is overlooked,
as if every second has been overbooked.

Take time to watch the sunrise and to hear the finch’s song.
Pick these things like flowers and carry them along.
Everything’s a lesson. All of nature is a book,
so between your rushing-offs, be sure to have a look.

Prompt words today are wonderment, ruckus, see-saw, perception, lesson and sing.

Ode to a Grackle

Ode to a Grackle

A variation of the crow,
you strut wherever you may go
unless you’re flying post to tree
to get a better look at me.

You stick your chest out, spread your tail
horizontal, you haughty male,
then fold it neatly, like a fan,
to vertical, because you can!

Three toes in front and one behind,
a songbird of the perching kind,
at a moment’s notice, you’re on the wing,
soaring above everything.

No cat that ever stalked a grackle
succeeded in his stealthy tackle.
No quagmire brings about your fall,
for you just glide above them all.

Every grackle that comes along
sings an ever-changing song.
He chirps, he purrs, he clucks, he whirrs,
whistles, squeegees, chatters, chirrs.

No bird save you, my coal-black grackle,
has such variety of cackle.
And when you deign to land en masse,
your music sounds like broken glass.

Though Mexico was your first home,
both south and north you chose to roam.
Like me, you dared to spread your wings
to see what that adventure brings.

And when you perch upon my tree
to share your company with me,
such varied music swells from your chest,
of all loud neighbors, I love you best.

*Grackle feathers were used ceremonially by the Aztecs, who it is speculated, brought them northwards for this purpose. Zanate is the Aztec name for what in the north we call mynah birds or grackles.

Prompts today are save, variation, grackle, quagmire and chest.

Morning Birdsong

Morning Birdsong

Each consecutive melody, sung with a full-throated enthusiasm and answered in kind achieves a second purpose that I’m sure is one unintended by nature. Encapsulated in deep sleep as I am, only they are effectual in actually  arousing me, for they form a chorus of alarm clocks that cannot be turned off.

I smooth the matted mane of Matteo, my love who sleeps through it all, and stumble to the kitchen to put on the coffee. As I drink my first cup, the male woodpecker joins his mate in the tallest palm tree outside the kitchen window. A second later, Matteo joins me as well and all is right in the world. He croons a soft aria into my ear and I answer in perfect harmony.

Word prompts for today are consecutive, encapsulate, effectual,  matteo and melody

effectual is producing the intended result; entirely adequate.

Everybody Needs a Bit of Cheering Up!

This is perhaps my favorite video ever sent to me on the internet. Nothing like birdsong to cheer a gal up!!!
