Studies of Pabu: Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Pets

This is my friends Allenda and Tony’s  darling dog Pabu. Limiting colors to black and white does not alter him at all. Click on photos to enlarge.

The prompt this week is pets.

Trick

The way this works is, I sneak up on them when they are already lying down and preferably asleep.  Then, very quietly, so as not to disturb them, I whisper, “Play dead!” It works every time. If you click on any photo, they will all enlarge.

For the Halloween Challenge prompt “trick.”

That 4-Letter D Word. What Other?

DOGS!!!!!

Whether at home with brother Diego or meeting new friends at the beach, Morrie is definitely a water dog. Once mom put the steps in the pool, it made it even easier to exit. He liked all the new scents at the beach—from babies to bottoms. Oh, Morrie.

Dead Possum

DSC07100

Dead Possum

A rude surprise,
it lay like breakfast rejected
on the patio outside the dogs’ sleeping room.

The dogs were restless this morning,
barking for their kibble,
unwilling to follow the rules
that decreed paws known all too well
as lethal weapons needed to be contained,
the dogs in their open cages before I’d venture out to feed.
But some wildness recently sated
drove them to assault the door
and refuse repeated demands to
go to their beds.
They staged their impatient war dance,
telling with growls and claws
the tale of the hunt—
That won battle.

I lock them in their cages
and, order restored, I dish their meals
and free them to their feed.
I walk behind them to secure the sliding glass door,
gather dust pan and broom, plastic pail.
Their quarry too large to fit, let alone be lofted
by a dust pan, I grasp the tail and lower the possum
like a colossal tea bag for a dipping,
into the wash bucket,
walk the long path down to the lower wall,
heft it over into deep underbrush
of the vacant lot next door.

I own that land.
It has been the burial place
of sixteen generations of those possums
too slow for escape,
with teeth and claws insufficient for defense––
every one a battle won
by the dogs
and each one equally mourned––
their wild ferocity not enough
to best even dogs seemingly grown docile
until these night battles
gone unnoticed in my dreams
are brought to view in light of day.

The possum’s fur wet and matted but only slightly torn,
every time I hopefully delude myself
that perhaps it’s playing witness to its name
and only playing possum.
Optimistically, I don heavy gloves and winter coat,
ready for the struggle as I try to save
what an adult part of me knows
no longer is in need of saving.

Each corpse ironically made heavier by loss of life,
that dead weight of it
is echoed in a central part of me
as I try to lift with reverence
this newest evidence
that most of life
and all of death
is out of our control.

Share Your World, Aug 7, 2017

This challenge, posted each month by Cee, asks that the participant answer a number of questions.  Here are this month’s questions and answers:

What was the last URL that you bookmarked or saved?

https://narami.wordpress.com/category/tuesdays-of-texture/

Do you believe in the afterlife?  Reincarnation?

I find it easier to believe in reincarnation than the afterlife.

If you were or are a writer do you prefer writing short stories, poems or novels?

Poems. I don’t have the patience for writing novels and although I started out writing short stories, I haven’t written a short story for a long time.

What inspired you this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

I’m always inspired by the WordPress Daily Prompt word.  Sometimes they seem impossible to write about, but it takes me into a different part of my mind when I go ahead and accept the challenge.

Even though I oftentimes will add photos to my answers, it is not a requirement to participate in Share your World.

Here are a few pictures chronicling my week so far (Click on first photo to enlarge and read captions):

If a movie was made based on your life, what actor/actress would play you?

Laura Linney.

If you could be famous for one thing, what would it be?

Writing.

Jan Golik’s “Junk Art”

Every time I see these photos in thumbnail view in my photo file, I think, “Now whose dog is that?”  Then I enlarge them and realize they are two views of one of Jan Golik’s fabulous junk art dog portraits.  I believe this one is of her own dogs and it looks exactly like him.  Amazing.

Okay, now here they are in larger views:

Sentinels: Cee’s B&W Challenge, “S”

On this day, wherever we went, there seemed to be animals on guard, seemingly as sentinels. In all probabiity they all just needed a comfortable place to perch. The first photo is of the entrance to a bank in Chapala.

Cee’s B&W Challenge: The letter “S.”

Low Pressure Area: NaPoWriMo 2017, Day 17, Nocturne

Low Pressure Area

The dogs have crept in
through the unlatched door
and gather, one on each side of my chair,
demanding hands
meant to be busy with words.
They are insistent—a reminder
that there is life
in the real world as well.

I scratch ears and bellies and tails.
Whiskers I pulled out of the little dog at the beach,
thinking they were sea urchin spines,
have grown back in again.
They are so foreign in his soft pelt
that I forgive myself for earlier cruelties.

It is an oddity,
having dogs inside the house—
the youngest one still
not quite to be trusted,
yet the comfort of two companions wins out
and they settle as though it is a normal thing.
The wind stirs the areca palms outside my window,
waves them like tattered flags
behind the reflected immovability
of the fragile spiral lamp
reflected in the window glass.

Friends gone.
Just we three.
And it is so dark, so dark.
The fan stirs invisible currents
that seem to comfort us all with their presence—
the hum of the blades
a mantra we share.

Suddenly, this night is different,

as though a new channel
has switched on in my brain—
a new pattern for living,
or perhaps it is just the barometer,
doing whatever barometers do
to lift a mood.

The prompt today is to write a nocturne.

Security is . . .

Security is a big comfy bed and permission to use it! (Click on any photo to increase the size of images.)

Today’s weekly photo prompt is a photo that represents security.
