Toronto’s in Mourning by Linda Crosfield

This poem by Linda Crosfield captures so beautifully the horror of the Toronto massacre.  I wanted to share it with you.  I’m printing the first two stanzas below.  Please use the link to her blog to see the remainder of the poem. As usual, her unique view gives a wonderfully personal view of events:

Toronto’s in Mourning

She’s mourning the scatter of crushed bags of groceries,
for crackers and cheeses and chocolate and lettuce,
the citrus-fuelled scent of oranges bought
to be peeled into segments of sweetness for lunch.

She’s mourning the bitter salt tears in the mouths
of those left to pick up the sunglasses, take-outs,
the backpacks, the paperbacks, iPhones and headscarves,
the briefcases, strollers, the coffees, the bikes.

Questions of Diminution

Questions of Diminution

Are lady goblins goblets
or tiny fobs called fobblets?
A little blob a bloblet?
An hors d’ oeuvre corn a coblet?
A little daub a daublet?
A short-lived job a joblet?
A mob of tots a moblet?
A jewel box knob a knoblet?
A minor theft a robblet?
A single tear a sobblet?

(Very sorry for this one. Blame it on the goblin prompt given by Forgottenman and the resultant mental processes that led to my having to research whether there were in fact also female goblins. The answer is still somewhat unresolved.)

July 3, 1947

July 3, 1947

The date above is notable
for reasons that are quotable.
It marks the birth of someone who
has  brought these few words into view
to put them in her blogging queue.
(True, that is what all bloggers do.)

But if there is a blogging heaven,
four thousand one hundred fifty-seven
might certainly be in the running
for snapshotting, rhyming and punning—
all those things we bloggers do
to try to get a rise from you.

In fact, in numbers I’ve been sparing
in how my blog count has been faring.
Blogs four thousand one-fifty-nine
are the numbers I claim as mine
for former blog posts that are done.
The next will end in sixty-one!

With sixty, alas, nothing rhymes
and so it is the least of crimes
that I don’t quote it as a score.
A small malfeasance, nothing more.
As poems go, this is not the best,
so please just rate me by the rest!

The prompt today is notable.

Magic: NaPoWriMo 2018, Day 27

The Magician

Through what I choose and where I give in,
I create the world I live in.
If I’m a trickster, I trick myself
and lay my talents on a shelf.
Seize control and I gain the world,
all my inner self unfurled.
Magic’s not a thing without
or a thing to sell or flout.
It’s simply using the strength within
to play the game of life and win.

The NapoWriMo prompt for the day is: pick a card (any card) from this online guide to the tarot, and then write a poem inspired either by the card or by the images or ideas that are associated with it.

Mystery Solved

My friend Larry Kolczak has allowed me to copy this hilarious email sent to me.  I’ve been trying to convince him he should have a blog himself. Do you agree?

Six months ago, we hung these beaded curtains on our second-floor patio fence to obscure the view into the neighboring lot.  Recently, …

… we started finding broken strands.  We figured it was because the curtains weren’t made for outdoor use, and that sun and wind had deteriorated the nylon strings.  But, that wasn’t the problem…

It turns out that many of the eco-friendly beads are acorns.

Guess who noticed?

He nips the string to get the uppermost acorn…

In and Out

In and Out

The Lapdog

Dogs that stand outside and seek admittance to within
overlook the worth of what they’ve seen and where they’ve been.
Those of us sealed fast inside yearn to see the world
that we have been deprived of as we lie securely curled
in the safety of our houses, away from chasing cars
and other fun activities kept from us by bars.
We would feel such ecstasy racing after squirrels,
other dogs and cats and lizards, skunks and boys and girls.
We seek to flee the rules that those street dogs seem to flout.
We would have such wild adventures if we only could get out!!

The Street Dog

Lucky little dogs with collars sit there looking out
as though they do not know what life for street curs is about.
We’d love to have their pampering and their daily feeding.
What they seek escape from is exactly what we’re needing!

Ringed Petunia: Flower of the Day, Apr 26, 2018

Goblins

Goblins

They steal into town to pillage and croon,
Invading on tiptoe, every third moon.
With fiery red hair and warts on their noses,
they cut all the tulips and pee on the roses.
Venting belches that reek of porter and scallions,
they chase all the ladies in randy battalions
and press scaly lips on unwilling misses
who scamper away to wipe off their kisses.
But still the next morning, their sickly taste lingers
on unlucky lips and unfortunate fingers
of girls who’ve attempted to purge these advances
that with lecherous hobgoblins pass for romances.
So all ye young maidens take heed of this warning.
Put off your wanderings until the morning!

Further thinking about whether there are in fact girl goblins and what their activities might be regarding human boys led me to write this additional (very bad) poem: https://judydykstrabrown.com/2018/04/27/questions-of-diminution/

The NaPoWriMo prompt was: write a poem that includes images that engage all five senses. Thanks to Forgottenman for adding the “goblin” prompt to the mix.

Elaborate Menus

It is my friend Patty’s last day visiting me in Mexico and I’ve already done two blogs, so for this one, I’m going to ask you to visit this very old blog from over three years ago to read about the two most elaborate meals I ever served!  Go HERE to twang your tastebuds!

The WordPress prompt word today is elaborate.
