Heading South
My friend put on her traveling gown
for London was her sort of town
where mouths share tales and shoulders rub
when friends or strangers meet at the pub.
My friend put on her traveling gown
for Paris was her sort of town—
gone to the boulevard to eat
and watch life from a streetside seat.
A demitasse or two, or more,
a shared baguette or petit four—
approachable down to the bone.
Better not to eat alone.
She was a traveler, born to roam
when she was not ensconced in home.
Back home, a cat upon her lap.
Away from home, a well-creased map.
On maps, the south is always down,
be it Paris or London town.
So be not sad or down at mouth.
Our friend is merely going south!
As I grow older, I like to think
one day we’ll meet there for a drink.
Well-versed, our friend will show us where
to sip our coffee in open air.
Or snuggle in for shepherd’s pie
in company fit for roving eye.
To lift a pint or raise a glass
once we have joined her there en masse.
When I was at my friend Patty’s house for a few nights this week, I shared the room with a shoebox-sized carton that contained the ashes of an old friend, sorority sister and traveling companion. Although I’ve seen her many times both in the States and in Mexico over the years, my last trip abroad with her and Patty was to Paris over thirty years ago. It is a place she returned to again and again, so when she passed away in a hotel room in London enroute to her favorite place over a year ago, I wrote the above poem. Although she requested that her ashes be spread in Paris, her lawyer said that this was illegal, so the morning I left Sheridan for Missouri two days ago, we buried Grimmer’s ashes in Patty’s beautiful flower and rock garden next to a busy road and across from a rodeo stadium. We could imagine her sitting on that nearby large rock to watch the action. It was a place more fitting for an observer of life than any ocean or mountaintop. R.I.P. Grimmer.

World like a White Stomach, Red Optional
My world does not move in circles
like your world.
It is so small I stand above it, head in space,
while a two-colored rainbow stretches in my wake—
its straight line an echo
of my unbent trajectory into the cosmos.
Three navels has my world
for the three births it delivers me to:
into this world, into myself and out of it.
Each is an adventure more easily seen
in a surreal world where things
do not behave.
Fish swim out of water.
Birds more commonly walk.
In the distance is the mystery
of different worlds.
What if we were born next time
to a different universe?
Stop and go.
The green of earth.
The red that’s not our only option
as we look away, searching
for the countless worlds beyond.
This is an extensive rewrite of a poem I wrote and posted three years ago. The prompt today was surreal.
When I got off the plane in St. Louis, this is the greeting that awaited me. If you don’t understand its significance, read THIS earlier post. Ha!!!!

Identification
When Freud talked about the ego, super-ego and the id—
all the different parts of us within which humans hid,
(all the things that made you “you” and things that made me “me”)
he thought that he’d identified all that there could be.
But if he were living, he would add a chapter or two
to say that id, ego and super-ego wouldn’t do.
There’s a punctuation omission I fear he failed to see.
It is that vital part of us that’s labeled the i.d.!
It used to be that I possessed my own identity
and showing up was proof enough that I was really me,
but now “me” is not me enough, and I find it hard
to face that I am only me when carrying a card.
The prompt word today is identity.
I love this autumn bouquet in front of my friend Jackie’s house.

Trademark Quality
My smile is not my trademark and neither is my hair.
If you check my waistline, you’ll find it isn’t there.
My clothes are not distinctive. I don’t drive a fancy car,
and if you rate my cooking, you’ll find it under par.
My figure is too stocky. My dogs are ill-behaved.
When I sang karaoke, nobody ever raved.
So my defining quality, now that you’ve thought to query,
is that I am perfect—perfectly ordinary!
The prompt today is Trademark.
I almost forgot the most important photo in my hospital theme for today’s “Share Your World.” When we were going through some papers, my sister Patti shared with me this copy of a letter she dictated to my sister Betty and sent to the hospital with my dad the day I was born. She was 4. My other sister who wrote the letter for her was 11. Patti insisted that I was a boy. (My dad had teasingly said they were going to name me Hazel.) Thanks, Dad, for not following through. Here is the letter as dictated by Patti and written down by Betty Jo:

Was school easy or difficult for you? How so? Relatively easy, but I studied.
List some of your favorite types of animals. Cats, Dogs, Raccoons, Birds in the wild, Chimpanzees.
What is your favorite large city you have been to? Los Angeles. What is the one thing you remember most? How active the poetry scene was there. Pioneer Boulangerie where I used to go to write and Leo Cabrillo Beach.
What inspired you or what did you appreciate this past week? Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination. Since my entire time here has been filled with dr. appointments and medical tests, I have so much appreciation for the friendliness and helpfulness of all the people at the hospital and the medical center here. Today I went to pick up the results of my tests at the medical records dept. It is hidden away so deep in the bowels of the hospital that they actually have a person guide you there from the front desk. Really! They did this both times I went there! When I arrived, I was greeted by these two lovely ladies who had made sure to make me copies and disks of all my tests and to get them ready super fast as I’m flying out tomorrow. We had a bit of a chat and they are thinking about visiting me in Mexico! As you can see, the Halloween spirit has hit even Medical Records.
Bye, Sheridan. Hello St. Louis!!!
