Mixed Bed: Flower of the Day, July 5, 2016

Marigolds, lobelia and cockscomb fill in around weathered wood in my friend Patty’s back yard. Thanks to a big wind that blew down her back fence, patio and part of her roof, her gorgeous yard is fully viewable from the major street that runs by the back of her house.

Flower of the Day, July 3, 2016

Water-logged or sun-dried, this hibiscus is one of my favorite sights of the day.

Strange Bedfellows: Garlic Blossoms and Aloe. Flower of the Day, June 28, 2016

DSCN1524

Here is another unlikely bouquet.  This time it is aloe and garlic blossoms.  My semi-wild garden creates some strange bedfellows.

Cannas Going to Seed: Flower of the Day, June 25, 2016

IMG_8733

I’m always fascinated by the different stages of budding, flowering and seeding.  I think this stage of my canna lilies is beautiful––both the subtle pastel greens and rose and the nubby seed receptacles that look like one of those soft rubber nubby squeeze balls they sell as kids’ toys or relaxing aids for adults.

Elephant Foot Palm Blossom: Flower of the Day, June 22, 2016

Yolanda came in today, very excited, to tell me I had to come see the flower on the elefante! I thought she meant the monster plant with giant leaves that Pasiano brought me a couple of years ago that took over the entire east wall, but it turns out it was this elephant foot palm and that it was an entire stalk of blooms. Yes, it is spectacular. Thanks, Yolanda.  I am so busy getting ready to leave that I would not have noticed. That would have been a shame.

These tiny garlic chive flowers are often overlooked, but lovely in their own right.
