Can anyone guess what flower this is? FOTD Sept 7, 2020

(No fair. It is actually the calyx that the huge yellow hibiscus from a few days ago fell off of! It’s so pretty that I just left it in the vase.)

This morning, it looks like this: (Click on photos to enlarge.)

Yellow Hibiscus: FOTD, Sept 4, 2020

Sadly, my neighbor Tomas passed away in his sleep a few days ago. When his wife Dolores left yesterday to go back to the states, she brought me the containers from a meal I’d taken over to them, as well as this beautiful yellow hibiscus. It was dinner-plate sized and more gorgeous than I was able to capture, probably because it was night before I thought to take a photo and no natural light was available. R.I.P. Tomas and safe travels, Dolores. Click on photos to enlarge.

Fourth Generation: FOTD, Aug 31, 2020

I believe I planted this hibiscus about four months ago and this is the fourth round of blooming. It is still pretty much a single stalk which sprouts three to five blossoms at a time, with one or two coming into full bloom at a time. The strange thing about this plant, however, is that each bloom seems to have different characteristics. I probably have more than a dozen different varieties of hibiscus in my yard, but all of the others have a pretty consistent shape that each flower is a duplicate of. It’s as though this plant, however, gives me little surprises every time it blooms.

For some reason, this hibiscus, planted at the same time as two others that are now three feet high or more, prefers to remain at ground level. Click on images to enlarge.

I don’t know if this hibiscus is in the act of opening up or closing down, but it makes for a novel capture. First time I’ve ever seen one do this.

I can’t bring it upon myself to kill these invaders, but my hibiscus plants pay the price. They get relocated to the spare lot. At this rate, it will be a relocation camp for caterpillars and snails! This guy was a huge one.

Mystery Annoyance: FOTD Aug 27, 2020

A friend gave me a few of these plants from her garden before she moved back to the states. I soon grew to rue the day I planted them as within a year they had started to take over my garden. They formed borders around the gazebo and the back wall and the studio, but soon they started to spread to potted plants and every single inch of the yard where they could find a foothold, so . . . .(Click on first photo and then each in sequence to read the rest of the story.)
