For Lens Artists Challenge 364, the prompt is “A Quiet Moment.“
One given when I come to the states is a trip to Walmart to stock up on items I either can’t get in Mexico or that are cheaper here. Yesterday, Marti and I were supposed to go out to dinner but when she arrived to pick me up, she asked if I’d mind if we went to Walmart instead.
There was a family–mom and dad with two little boys and a baby girl in front of me in line at checkout. They had two cart absolutely full of groceries plus school supplies for the boys as school starts next week. The baby was in a carrier right in front of me and we started flirting. She held her hand out to me and I shook it. She had a darling big plush toy and I was saying how cute it was. She just kept “talking” to me.. no words, just gobbledygook, and smiling and holding her hands out to me and we kept holding hands and flirting with each other.
I told her I liked her toy and asked to hold it. I hugged it (it was sooo soft and cuddly) then gave it right back. The mom said they were from the Philippines and came because her husband’s mom arranged it. I asked where they worked, etc. She was a nurse in Veteran’s hospital. Then the mom took the plush animal and put it on the display beside the cash register, saying she just gave it to the baby to keep her busy while they were shopping but they weren’t going to buy it, it was too expensive. When the mom wasn’t looking, one of the little boys took it off the display and gave it back to his little sister. So sweet. He said to me, ‘She wants it.”
Long story short, I bought the toy and gave it to her. We’d traded names earlier and before they left, the mom told me they were going to name it Judy! Such a fun time. The mom and dad both gave me hugs before they left.

Forgottenman just asked me to add this photo, which he says is his favorite. This is my mom holding me up in my stroller. I love it, too, so I will comply with his wishes.
For My Vivid Blog prompt: Baby
A few weeks ago, I showed you this little monster, along with the teddy bear I got for Santiago (not yet born) in the states.

Now it seems that little monster I brought back to Mexico from the U.S. has turned into a little angel! This is Santiago who at a little less than a month old, fills out this 3 month old outfit pretty well. Click on photos to enlarge.
Santiago is my housekeeper/friend Yolanda’s grandson. His folks are her oldest son Juan Pablo and his wife Emilia. I showed photos of their wedding celebration earlier this year. I am so happy to be this little boy’s honorary Grandma. Looks like he is all ready for Halloween!

The Mystery of the Vanishing Red Tennis Ball Lids!!!!
My small dog is a fetcher, but oh, at what a cost.
I swear for every twenty balls I throw, one shows up lost.
I’ve been buying tubes of tennis balls for many years,
yet within a few months, our supply is in arrears.
I go to buy another lot that vanishes the same.
Where are these balls? What eats them? What ambitious tree’s to blame
for hoarding them like fruit up high in assorted branches
where they are invisible, thwarting all our chances
to retrieve the orbs that are so vital for my throwing,
and in his pursuit of them, for Morrie’s come and going?
There is another mystery surrounding this adventure—
one that is more serious, occasioning my censure.
These tubes of tennis balls that come packaged in neat threes
so I can loft them from the pool to reside in trees,
happen to have covers that I find indispensible
and when you know the reason why, I’ll think you’ll find it sensible
that I hoard them like diamonds, a utilitarian treasure—
for it just so happens that they fit, measure for measure
my cans of open cat food, and dog food, too, precisely.
No tops bought for this purpose can seal the cans so nicely.
Since I feed seven animals two times every day,
there are always half-full cans I have to put away.
They have four different diets, and for every one I feed
I need a different can of food, so you can see my need
for those red tops that seal them up, free from any smell
that makes a fridge with human food smell like cat food Hell!
For my odor-free fridges, I’m fast in Wilson’s debt,
for I’ve had Morrie for four years and in that time, I bet
I’ve purchased 15 tubes of balls for him to chase and chew.
So I should have 15 red tops. Still, I have only two!
Where can these tops be going? Is my dog-walker purloining them
to sell on the black market? And have tennis balls been joining them?
Are they being used as Frisbees by some child of a friend
who snatches them when I am not there to apprehend
this purloiner of cat food lids, this wily thief of tops,
knowing that no sane person would dare to call the cops
over a piece of plastic, no matter how securely
it hugs the tops of dog food cans–so snuggly and so purely?
Are dogs stealing and chewing them and burying them after?
Have the cats purloined them and stowed them in some rafter?
I’ve questioned sweet Yolanda who must think that I am crazy.
She only shakes her head at me, looking somewhat hazy.
“Donde estan mis tapas rojas?” Pasiano, on a breather,
does not seem to have a single clue of what I’m saying, either.
They point out other pet food lids. I’ve purchased quite a few,
but not one fits securely. Only tennis ball lids will do.
Each life contains its mysteries—mundane or scintillating—
concerning who put dents in cars or whom our kids are dating.
Things break, get lost or vanish by means less than pernicious,
and yet the regularity of my thefts is suspicious!
These valueless little objects to me are indispensible
and so I find the loss of them especially reprehensible!
Roll on the floor and laugh at me. Deride me if you must,
but I still view these petty thefts to be vile and unjust.
I’d like to solve the mystery. Stop the crime spree. Put the skids on it,
so I can solve the crime and literally put the lids on it!

Ragtag’s word of the day is clew.
Fandango’s word of the day is scintillating.
And, the Daily Addiction’s prompt is ambition.
This is what Cee wanted to know this week:
If you were to pack a basket for picnic lunch, what would be in your basket?
In my picnic basket? Egg salad and ice cream
and one thousand ants, invading in a stream!
On a vacation what you would require in any place that you sleep?
When I lay me down to sleep,
I require a silence deep,
covers warm and soft and clean,
freshly washed in a machine.
But mostly, where I lay my head,
I pray, no bedbugs in my bed!
If you were to buy a new house/apartment what is the top three items on your wish list?
A bathroom for each bedroom, and bedrooms? At least two.
A kitchen with much storage, complete with maid would do,
A porch swing or two rocking chairs—a terrace with a view.
And interesting neighbors to enrich each day anew.
What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week?
My friend sent me a devil duck, as you can plainly see.
I put it in the pool to keep me company.
This cafe dessert was so-so, but Terry made a flan
that was so delicious, I had to lick the pan!
The showing by my friends was great. I always like their art,
but this brand new baby also won my heart.
Two cats no longer kittens, now just barely fit
on cushions where all four once lay, but they do not know it!

I found this little buttercup in the San Juan Bautiste procession the other day. If you’ve had sufficient hibiscus and bougainvillea from me, perhaps you’ll appreciate the switch:

Oh Baby, Baby
I just located these prints from a time long ago before I had a digital camera. They were taken in a hacienda long-abandoned by the family whose descendants still owned it, but was still being maintained by the descendants of a family that had been caring for it for hundreds of years. They were very grateful for the 200 pesos we pressed into their hand to see the remains of past glory and we were very grateful to see a house left pretty much as it was with furniture, paintings and kitchen intact. The part of the experience I liked best, however, was capturing this charming little character on film!
