Pretentious Prattle

Pretentious Prattle

Her highfalutin language is torture to absorb.
She calls asbestos “earthflax,” a snow globe a “blizzard orb.”
Her words are too elaborate and to be blunt, untenable.
We find her conversation to be way less than amenable.

In any conversation, she is early to be heard,

but it is the consensus that her comments are absurd.
We wait for her to finish, then calmly leave the table,
reconvening in the garden, without her, if we’re able.

Prompt words are finish, untenable, early, elaborate, earthflax and snow globe. Image by Mona Masoumi on Unsplash.

NaPoWriMo Day 4: Lost Weekend

Lost Weekend

Trapped within this living Hell,
no guardian angel  breaks the spell.
Colored tan or gray or brown.
Elevator music, sound turned down.

Slow as molasses or legs in splints.
It’s windows smudged by fingerprints
so not one ray of light gets through.
Caught fast like velcro, stuck like glue.

Pointless conversation tending
to go on without an ending.
Tasteless food within the fridge.
Endless hours of contract bridge.

TV blaring with contact sports,
Fox News and stock market reports.
Boredom swells like a balloon.
Would that it were over.  Soon!

NaPoWriMo Day 4, The prompt was to express an abstract idea through Concrete Images. I chose “boredom.”

Sealed and Sequestered

IMG_7278 (1)Sealed and Sequestered

Plenty to fill a locked-in room
with imagination to spark the gloom.
Left on my own, sequester’s blight
gives time to think and time to write.
I’d have no cause to weep and moan
if I were sealed up on my own.
Just one thing might chill my core––
if sealed up with me was the world’s worst bore!

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “1984.”You’re locked in a room with your greatest fear. Describe what’s in the room.

Get the Hint and Please, Repent!

Get the Hint and Please, Repent!

A door that opens with a creaky hinge
is sure to make me frown and cringe,
but nothing makes me shiver more
than a lengthy lecture by a raving bore.

When at a party, I walk away
as they pontificate and bray,
but at a lecture or in church
one just can’t leave them in the lurch.

This is when a raging cough
quickly developed, can get one off.
A rapid exit towards the door
delivers you from any more.

More naive listeners might excuse
since they have not seen through your ruse.
More clever ones view your quick exit
wishing they had thought of it!

So those who think they have much wit
and find it difficult to quit
when displaying it to others
(with the exception of their mothers,)

take heed when those you’ve asked to gather
to hear your blah blah blah and blather
start to cough and start to hack,
bolt out the door and don’t come back!!!

The Prompt: Cringe-Worthy–What’s most likely to make you squirm?
