After he finished the murals on my house, Jesus Lopez Vega went to paint a fabulous mural on the outside wall of my friends Candace and Bob’s house. They had a sort of ribbon-cutting for it yesterday where Jesus explained the symbols of the mural and also talked about the book he has written on the history of the villages on the north side of lake Chapala. Hopefully, it will be published next year. Here are some of the photos of the mural and the people who came to its grand kickoff. You can click on the photos to enlarge them and read captions.
The mural is located at the corner of Zaragoza and Nino Heroes in Chapala. It is two blocks north of the Malecon and two blocks east of Francisco Madero, the street that the church is on.
This picture was captured as a result of a photo shoot for “Thursday Doors.” I was leaving a writer’s group meeting at a local hotel/restaurant when I saw a doorway with lovely flowers and birds surrounding the door, along with some other surprises I discovered when taking pictures of the details. At first, I didn’t realize that one of the details was merely an impromptu visitor. Luckily, he stood still as I snapped a few closeups. Reality is happier than fiction, for this grasshopper escaped the hummingbird’s beak, even though this picture might tell a different story!
You’ll see the entire mural in next week’s Thursday Doors.

I Love how the characters in the murals below seem to be reacting to the dancers in front of them. Such fun!
This studious-looking dancer seems aware of the disapproval of the Huichol woman behind her.
Dancer and mural observer seem equally petulant.
I asked Isidro to translate “In Mexico There is Always Music”–the name of a piece I had written–into Spanish. Instead, he wrote a brief poem on that subject in Spanish which I then translated into English! So this is a see-saw bit of poetry that I then had him paint on my wall.
