About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Belvedere

Belvedere

Strolling through the belvedere at sunset, just with you,
I pretended that I’d brought you here for the uncanny view.

Yet I really formed a rapt audience of one.
You are the only view I seek when the day is done.

I’m just your part time lover, and yet I must confess
that when I see your line of jaw, your hair braid or your dress,

it catapults my heart into regions that are new.
I’d like to make a wallpaper of visions just of you

so that all the whole day long, whatever I might do,
I could live forever surrounded by your view.

Prompt words today are part time, Belvedere, catapult, wallpaper, audience and uncanny.

A belvedere or belvidere is an architectural structure sited to take advantage of a fine or scenic view. The term has been used both for rooms in the upper part of a building or structures on the roof, or a separate pavilion in a garden or park.  And, it is also a brand of Vodka!!!

War Lords

War Lords

Need I be explicit in describing wars of yore?
Any valiant action may be the stuff of lore.

Warriors turned to veterans relate their tales of glory,
the motives of those men who start them are more base and gory.

The noble causes they purport to be their reasons for them,
carved in stone and writ in books that seem to all adore them,

are often myth, for wars are fought for power and for gold
that seldom is passed down to warriors who are brave and bold.

Possessions, land and castles are the bijoux of the rich
who start the wars that poor men fight for in the ditch.

No electricity today so this poem written by flashlight and recorded via hotspot on my phone and posted.

Prompt words today are carved, explicit, bijoux (jewelry or trinket), purport, veteran and warrior. Image by jdb. See more about this image HERE.

Rules of Order

Rules of Order
(Mom’s Note Taped up on The Fridge)

I have a part time passion for things in their right place.
Shoes go in the closet. A nose goes on a face.
An Oxford comma bothers me when placed before an “and.”
An apostrophe in a plural word? Something I can’t stand!

“Me and her,” though common in modern print and speech,
is a solecism that I must beseech
you not to make. The use of it is bound to cause a screech.
Such errors unforgivable—a gross grammatical breach.

When issued from an errant tongue, it’s sure to cause a rise
in my pulse and blood pressure and pitchforks in my eyes!!!!
When I was a teacher, I’d put squiggles through a word
like “awesome” for its overuse was one I found absurd.

In striking out such errors, I felt most justified,
to save its proper usage for times more bonafide.
Right things in right places just somehow soothe my soul.
Sorting out the universe is my heartfelt goal.

Forks all on the left side, spoons and knives all on the right.
Bowls all stacked up on a shelf are a lovely sight.
Ants all neatly marching in their single rows.
Orderly arrangements? Even Nature knows

are the proper way for all the world to go,
and now that I’ve informed you, even you must know
enough to know that order makes me a happy camper,
so after this, please put your dirty socks into the hamper!!!

Yarrow, for FOTD, Aug 6, 2022

Thanks to Rebecca and Rita for telling me this is a yarrow flower!  It is from my friend Patty’s garden in Wyoming. It is a very large head, similar to a cauliflower. You can judge by the size of the bee.

More Proof of Rain

Zoe was curled all snug in her bed instead of out ripping
up my garden and terrorizing her brothers!

For Sam. Proof of Rain

For all of those of you suffering from drought or fire, I offer proof of rain and hope it soon appears in your life.
