About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Human History

Human History

Our thirst for sharing stories is natural as breath.
It comes to us with our first words and only leaves with death.
That space that holds the stars apart is present in our hearts
and that is where our need to share our stories really starts.
Those common roots that bind us, those roads our footsteps share
compel us to reveal what otherwise we would not dare.
Those tales we feign divide us. True ones create a chain
where we are linked together in victory and pain
as we tell our stories that run together to
reveal the whole history of the human zoo.

Prompt words today are: thirst roots feign roads chain share stories run breath stars apart first for Wordle 556, The Sunday Whirl

No Pattern

No Pattern

To placate her parents, they said that she’d improve.
With praxis and time’s passage, she would slip into the groove.
They said that she would blossom like all the other girls,
subscribe to dolls and ruffles, to lipstick and to curls.
But she remained mysterious, preferring other things.
She asked for cars and baseballs instead of pretty rings.
She didn’t set the table or ask to dry the dishes.
To help her dad cut firewood fell more within her wishes.
No formula they set for her worked out for her because
stubbornly and true to self, she turned out who she was!

Prompt words are placate, subscribe, mysterious, praxis, table and blossom. Image by Reeney Jenkins on Unsplash.

Entry Jungle: FOTD June 12, 2022

We’ve cleared away a good deal of the “jungle” in front of my house, but are busy planting other plants to replace it, including this Heliconia which now sports four blooms. This is the newest one.

Looking for Oscar

Yesterday, torrential morning rains kept Oscar away from his usual Friday morning visit to walk the dogs. Zoe sat by the door for most of the morning, whining and  hoping for his arrival. This morning, she did the same. Poor baby. She won’t be walking on Monday, either, as she is scheduled to be spayed. I’ll take her for a walk today.

Qualms

Qualms

He’s preoccupied with thoughts of flight with no intent to stay.
Amid the fuss, his only thought? He has to run away.
What creates the tension? His need to keep at bay
the awareness that his nuptials are scheduled for today.

Does the groom have any doubts? I think, perhaps, he may.
His wedding vows have slipped his mind and stolen clean away.
When he’s asked the pertinent question, dare he utter, “Nay?”
The music starts and he walks down the aisle on feet of clay.

Prompts today are  run, preoccupationcreate, tense, nuptials, amid.

Uphill Climb

Uphill Climb

Wind decries my progress on this uphill trail—
any ingress I might make impeded by the gale.
Moths whip against my shoulders. Birds soar far over head.
On days like this I feel as though I’d rather stay in bed.

But blessings spiral downward once the sun begins to rise
and another glorious day appears before my eyes.
Dull thoughts dry up in morning light and inspiration dawns—
all struggles of this waking up dispensed of with my yawns.

Prompt words today are decry, dull, wind, ingress, downward and moths.
