About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Fleeced and Avenged

Fleeced and Avenged

When first my antagonist burst upon the scene,
he was an enterprising human sales machine.
I was his favorite client, an accomplishment for sure—
innocent and gullible and open to the lure.
I had little experience foreshadowing the end.
No idea at all what lay waiting ’round the bend.

But I fear his achievement was unduly brief,
because Daddy called the sheriff, declaring him a thief.
Now he’s living in the jailhouse and his board and room is free.
He’s living on the county now—not on little old me!

Today’s prompts are achievement, foreshadow, antagonist, enterprise, burst and accomplishment.  Image from Pinterest.

Foolish Pride

Foolish Pride

He folds his arms.
She seals her mind.
Their last contact
back-to-back.
Each sure the other
meant to wound,
pride seals their futures.
Sad ending remembered
for a lifetime.

State of Zoe: Enjoying her Pain Meds

In case you don’t know, Zoe was spayed yesterday afternoon. Mom was worried, but Zoe seems to have come through it with flying colors. The vet said Just as she was giving her the shot to anesthetize her, that Zoe reached up and licked her on the face! She had a fan club by the time I picked her up 5 hours later.

Reblog of M.Oniker’s “Democracy’s Death Rattle”

Below is just the heading and opening paragraph of a post by M. Oniker that gives voice to exactly how I and many of my friends have been feeling. She gives a link to an article she is responding to, but if you follow it, please come back to this page and click on the link below it to read the rest of her essay.

Due to trying not to stress out too much, I cannot read a lot of the news in depth any more. I am no longer a news junkie. I read enough to keep aware of what is going on. For the most part, that seems like: Same song, different verse. However, two news themes have been recurring frequently, getting my attention, and they are making me tense up. Those are the crazy book censorship agendas that are spreading with wild-fire speed, not only in schools but in public libraries, and the other is the news that so-and-so is a proclaimed election denier and is running in this or that state’s primary election for some public office, and that so-and-so has won the GOP nomination. This, of course, is in addition to the news from Ukraine, environmental disasters, abortion rights, gun violence, inflation, and Will Smith hitting Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Today The Washington Post smacked me in the face with the headline that “More than 100 GOP primary winners back Trump’s false fraud claims.” . . . .(more) To read the rest of M. Oniker’s post, please click on this link: https://wtfaioa.wordpress.com/2022/06/14/politics-democracys-death-rattle/

Undertow

Undertow

Dreams conflate reality, making it surreal—
blend present, past and future until they all congeal.
Therein we twist reality into a tangled fray
that’s lived at night but vanishes in the light of day.

We blunder through their memory, half knowing what is real,
trying to sort out whether we know or sense or feel.
If we could just replay them like a picture show,
we might bring to the surface their mysterious undertow.

Prompts today are: only, twist, blunder, vanish and conflate.

Grandpa’s Solo Visits

Grandpa’s Solo Visits

It’s mysterious how the volume of our cereal goes down
whenever Grandpa chooses to visit in our town.
Without Grandma’s influence, his willpower is zilch
and so he takes this opportunity to filch
our Coco Puffs and Captain Crunch and other cereal,
for he likes a little crackling in his morning meal
along with all the sugar, ‘cuz he swears it puts some zip
in his faltering “get-along” and soothes his aching hip.
None of us tell Grandma, because once he has his fill,
when we all go out for ice cream, Grandpa picks up the bill!!!!

Prompts today are: volume, cereal, mysterious, filch, influence and crackling. Before you ask, this is pure fiction. Sadly, I never had a grandpa. They both died before I was born. If I’d had one, though, I wish he’d been like this grandpa.

Kangaroo Coup

Kangaroo Coup

I scored a knockout in Kentucky against a kangaroo.
Before he aimed his kick at me, I simply staged a coup.
I could have killed with kindness, but  I chose not to do it
because I knew that if I did, I’d very likely rue it.
