Allenda’s Gardenia: Flower of the Day, Sept.20, 2016

The deer had eaten most of the flowers in my friend Allenda’s hillside gardens, but this gardenia and a few mums had escaped a place in their salad table.  More flowerless photos will follow in a subsequent post.

April asked if gardenias are edible.  Yes, in fact they are said to have a sweet taste when eaten raw.  For a recipe for crystallized gardenia petals, go here:

Elephant Foot Palm Blossom: Flower of the Day, June 22, 2016

Yolanda came in today, very excited, to tell me I had to come see the flower on the elefante! I thought she meant the monster plant with giant leaves that Pasiano brought me a couple of years ago that took over the entire east wall, but it turns out it was this elephant foot palm and that it was an entire stalk of blooms. Yes, it is spectacular. Thanks, Yolanda.  I am so busy getting ready to leave that I would not have noticed. That would have been a shame.

Plumeria, tabachine and calla lilies are the main stars of the front of the lower garden. The path leads to my art studio.

Stolen Flowers

I didn’t actually steal these flowers.  I merely photographed them as I drove down the hill to buy bags of dirt for some replanting . I actually drove past, then stopped, backed up and parked so I could take these shots.  Certainly better filled out  than my two strands.

Tabachine with Black Swallowtail: Flower of the Day, June 5, 2016

This tabachine bush was covered with butterflies, but they are almost impossible to photograph. They are constantly lighting for a few seconds and then flying off, circling, lighting––but never long enough to get much more than a blue. I felt fortunate to get one good shot.

This is the tree I asked Pasiano to cut down twice six months ago, when it was in its messy dormant stage where it was dropping all its leaves to stand ugly and gray beside the pool.  I guess I’m glad he didn’t, but may change my mind when it is once again flowerless and leafless!

I couldn’t reisist three more shots of the “Lluvia de Oro” or Golden Shower Tree.  The sun was right today and they are so exotic up close.

Little Purple Bush Flower: Flower of the Day, May 27, 2016

Still Unidentified!!!

Can you see the little purple flower against this backdrop?
Or now?
perhaps if I climbed up closer.
Do you see it now?
Why didn’t I think of breaking off a piece earlier? Much easier to identify it in person.
But alas, no luck.

Here are some more shots of the little purple flower that I played around with yesterday.  I don’t think I gave any idea of how tiny it is, so I’m trying again today.  As you can see, it is smaller than a thumbnail and difficult to see against all the color of flashier flowers and foliage surrounding it. My research didn’t yield the name of this flowering bush, although at one point I saw two pictures of it on my screen that matched exactly.  I was so excited before I determined that I was looking at my own photos!  Back to the drawing board. This little flower, tiny and non-assuming, deserved a makeover.  I’ll try to reclaim her “before photo” in a minute and share it with you, as well.

Poor little thing. Tiny, out of focus, a bit shriveled up, hidden by denser foliage. I’ll try to do better by her tomorrow.

Golden Shower Tree (Cassia Fistula) : Flower of the Day, May 26, 2016

I found two of these gorgeous long clusters hanging down from a tree near the entrance to the house.  Yolanda says it has been there for 14 years, but I have never noticed the blooms before.  How could this be?  It is so shaded by the Poinciana tree that it hasn’t leafed out below.  This bloom cluster was higher up where it could get some sun.  Amazing.   It has a long skinny pistil that curves up. If you click on the photos, you’ll be able to see it.  Thanks to Gaya for identifying it for me.
