Vulture
I am not too fond of this peculiar guy
who seeks an invitation to see my latest buy.
He barely fits the envelope of people I can bear,
for he is always scouting out possessions that are rare.
So it is with priceless antiques that he says are just old
and so he makes these propositions that are brash and bold.
When I replace this table with one brand spanking new,
he could haul off this old one for me (for a buck or two.)
He thinks I do not know the value of all that I buy
and so he reconnoiters with a greedy eye,
and when he sees an object that has seen a bit of wear,
he’ll focus on the object with his greedy stare
and say that when I’m done with it and go to buy another,
he could take my old one and give it to his mother.
Friends like this, I’m sure you’ll say, come a dime a dozen,
and I’d agree and shun him if he weren’t my only cousin!
Prompt words today are envelope, peculiar, invitation, seek, latest and spanking.
Smart Wooing
Smart Wooing
He met her on the parkway where she sold her sweet confections
in a lot where merging roads made their first connections.
He, too, sought a connection for he found her very fine
as he viewed her from his place at the end of a long line
of some who sought her pastries, but others who sought more.
Clearly, not the only man who’d felt his heart to soar
when he viewed her classic beauty, he had known at once that she
was the perfect partner to balance on his knee.
And though his first reaction was to woo her with dramatic
declarations of his love, he was more pragmatic.
When finally it was his turn, he simply bought each bit
of confectionary she had left and asked her help with it.
So as other hopeful suitors had to fade away,
there being no excuse for all of them to stay,
he asked if since his car was small, if she could deliver
to the homeless shelter that was down there by the river.
And then if she wanted, she could even stay
to see the excitation as he gave the sweets away.
The occasion was his birthday and he thought the greatest lift
that he could get in celebrating was to give this gift.
And so he got into his car and she followed after,
stayed for the party afterwards, enjoying all the laughter.
You might guess, he won the maiden, for it’s no surprise
that sometimes in giving, one wins the greatest prize.
Prompt words today are partner, connections, homeless, pragmatic
diplomatic and parkway.

? ? ? ? ? ? You have 11 minutes free time, how do you spend it best with regards entertainment? Wordle, Word Huddle and Quordle, in that order. |
| Are you a fan of feet either yours or others or are you averse feet? Why and why? I love taking photos of feet!!! I need to do a blog soon on my accumulation. I guess it is because in Mexico it is so important to look down when you walk due to cobblestones, uneven stair heights and other earthbound dangers. |
| When you are wrong and you know you are wrong do you admit to being wrong or try and find a right for your wrong? I think I admit it. Sometimes grudgingly, though. |
| Are you more of a night owl or a morning lark? Night Owl, but recently a Morning Lark as well. Not getting much sleep. |
| Do you listen to audiobooks and if so what is the appeal? How many do you get through every month? I have constantly had an audiobook to listen to for the past ten years or more. By evening my eyes give out and I’m not capable of reading print, plus I like to listen to books when I’m swimming, doing art, driving or swinging in the hammock. I love doing two things at once. It feels like I’m being granted twice as much life. I listen to a minimum of 2 books a month. Usually more. |
| Do you bore quickly and if so why and how do you combat it and if not, how do you avoid that boredom? I do if the topic is mundane, the speaker quoting the obvious or when talking to someone unwilling to surrender the conversation to any other speaker. I just tune out and start writing a poem in my head. |
| What is one thing that you wish your readers knew about you and your blog? It is an addiction. I think a good one but another part of me thinks it is keeping me from finishing other projects begun long ago that I really would like to bring to fruition. |
| What items do you have on the top shelf of your fridge right now, today? Oat milk with linseeds, salsa verde, prunes, yogurt, Electrolit, Mashed potatoes at least 2 weeks old, cottage cheese, two kinds of salad dressing, peanut butter, a box of baking soda and a bowl with what looks like 3 tablespoons of two-week-old beef stew. Don’t ask me why. Perhaps I thought I’d have it for a midnight snack? Unlikely now. |
| Are you able to stand on one leg for 25 seconds? Not without touching something solid. |
| What are your favourite book titles from the following six categories? [One item only per genre please – use alternative genre if first choice is not your style] Comedy or Children’s literature Sock Talk (self-aggrandizing. I wrote it.) Horror or Historical Fiction Wuthering Heights Mystery or Memoir Michele Obama’s autobiography, Becoming Thriller or Adventure Peter Pan Romance or Poetry Jane Eyre Fantasy or Sci-Fi Batman |
| What twelve items would you take to a deserted island if you were going to be stranded there for twelve months and why those items – how are they functional to your survival? Sunscreen, deck of cards, thick journal or tablet, felt pen, glue, umbrella, sun hat, long-sleeved blouse, long pants, comfortable shoes, phone or ipad loaded with lots of books, spare batteries. I am completely allergic to the sun, thus the umbrella, sun hat, sunscreen and coverup clothing. The deck of cards and audible books are for entertainment, the journal and pens for writing. I guess with an i pad I wouldn’t need the journal, pen and pencil so I could have three more items. The glue is to make collages out of found objects. If there was nothing to eat on the island, I guess it would be a large container of cans of tinned food and a can opener.
[You can not take people, or any means of escape and there is no Internet access or electricity] |
| Does the society of today need social media platforms? Are they dying – as is suggested – off or are people simply after something else that is socially oriented but more personable? From being around three kids of the new millenium for a couple of weeks lately, I would say they are not dying. I really do fear the capacity of twenty-somethings and younger to engage in their present reality…It was almost impossible for them to stay off their phones. |

Thalassic Theorem
Thalassic Theorem
Salty sea air and grainy sand
went great with sun and being tanned.
Their memory swirls within my head
as I prepare myself for bed.
But I do not wax nostalgic, for I find behind each knee,
in my pockets, luggage and the floor, the beach came home with me!
For the Weekend Writing Prompt: Thalassic (of the sea) write a poem or story of exactly 50 words making use of the word Thalassic.

Sweet Dove
Sweet peas and petunias fill the gutters on this morning,
and bluebirds buzz your head and land on shoulders without warning.
Curmudgeons sprout wide smiles and doubters grow proactive.
And even grim Chernobyl becomes less radioactive.
Guns forsake their targets and missiles stop their tracking,
and mathematicians give up seeking what they’re lacking.
It’s Universal Peace Day, and for once all enter in
as the hand that holds the grenade pauses to pull the pin.
Prompt words today are curmudgeon, proactive, apocryphal, target, gutter and morning. Image by Sunguk Kim on Unsplash.

Scrabble Quibbles
Scrabble Quibbles
I move the tiles back and forth but still I cannot lick
the secret to which words may be made from my weird pick.
I cannot spell “memorial” without another “m,”
so instead I settle and simply spell out “rim.”
Before too long I find another perfect word to make,
but, alas, I do not have the “u” to spell out quake.
I spy the final “u” when my opponent shifts her rack,
and so I skip my turn to return some letters back.
And this segment of the story will prove I was to blame
when my sister drew the “q” and spelled out “quick” to win the game!
Prompt words today are segment, lick, memorial, back, spy and tiles.
Not the most thrilling poem ever, but at least it used up all the words. Mea Culpa.
Plant Opportunists: FOTD Nov 9, 2022
All three of these tiny plants are growing out of little holes that opened up in one of my big pots near the pool. They are like bonsai volunteers.

Quartets of Memory
To what extent
do you lament
losing the blush
of teenage crush?
Tease and chuckle,
tight-gripped knuckle,
that challenge of
teenage love—
to cultivate
a future mate—
dawdling where
a certain stare
might meet with yours.
These sweet amors
left in the past,
nonetheless last.
Some afternoons
listening to tunes
of a past kind,
they come to mind.
Prompt words today are knuckle, challenge, lament, cultivate, dawdle. Image by Eric Krull on Unsplash.
