CFFC: Birds

So glad to finally find a bird prompt. The first photo I took perhaps a month ago and I’ve wanted to post it. The small birds hopping around my pool edge are more current. For some reason I didn’t want to crop, but wanted to show their size by leaving them in the larger frame. The oriole I took earlier this year. Please click on photos to enlarge.

Old Friends

Old Friends

Like a well-worn garment rubbed thin by life,
I’m becoming translucent,
my secrets still partially obscured,
lest you be inundated with the whole of me.

Friends of long duration,
we see each other
as through a light fog,
that scathing inflexibility of youth
loosened in us,
as I grant you the foibles
I hope you grant in me.

Prompt words today are translucent, inundate, flexibility, scathe.

Infinite Variety

Infinite Variety

Some cling to what’s affordable, others to what is queer.
What one finds most deplorable, another might find dear.
No matter what opinion you may choose to hold,
one friend will think you’re crazy, another find you bold.

There’s an incredible range of palates in this human bunch.
What one regards as garbage, another eats for lunch.
What touches one by someone else may seem sentimentality.
And what another finds profound to others is banality.

From rap to opera to rock, we sing our various tunes,
from the crudest of rap lyrics to moons and croons and Junes.
Infinite variety might be the perfect label
for the various personalities humans bring to the table.

Prompt words are cling, affordable, queer, opinion and touch.

Orange

The luscious-looking dessert on that orange table top is capirotada, a traditional bread pudding with fruit that is made during Lent in Mexico.

In His Dreams

In His Dreams

I listen to his sad refrain.
Won’t I please throw the ball again?
The fright that I will not comply
is reflected in each eye.
They vilify and then they plead.
Throwing’s a must, not just a need.

As I accept the ball and throw,
long and hard and sure and low,
his retrieval skills are so efficient,
a dozen lofts are not sufficient.
He gives a snort, is here, then there
to catch the ball while in the air.

This small tangled ball of hair
curled up on the bottom stair—
I know he’s dreaming when I hear his yip,
see running legs, a sudden dip
of jaw that signals his success.
He’s caught the ball I threw, I guess.

His need to fetch so strong and deep,
I’m sure he does it in his sleep.
I wonder if I fully stand

within his dream, or is a hand
the only evidence at all
of one who throws the yearned-for ball?

Prompts for today are fright, vilify, snort, refrain and sleep.

Feral Nature

Feral Nature

This being human is hard
when your blood
draws you to midnight,
throat stretched in a love song
torn from a wild soul.

Your wiry pelt,
raised by the moon’s gravitational pull,
sheds humanity’s cloak,
springs out from hiding,
and reveals its ruff.

The wildest creature for miles,
you lope for the forest,
then bound to the highest hill
to proclaim this night’s dominion
over a too-tame world.

For All Who Aren’t Sure

FOR all who aren’t sure, it is possible to be gay and Christian. It’s also possible to believe in God and science. It is possible to be pro-choice and anti-abortion.

It is equally possible to be a feminist and love and respect men. It’s possible to have privilege and be discriminated against, to be poor and have a rich life, to not have a job and still have money. It is possible to believe in sensible gun control legislation and still believe in one’s right to defend one’s self, family, and property, it’s possible to be anti-war and pro-military.

It is possible to love thy neighbor and despise his actions. It is possible to advocate Black Lives Matter and still be pro police. It is possible to not have an education and be brilliant. It is possible to be Muslim and also suffer at the hands of terrorists. It is possible to be a non-American fighting for the American dream.

It is possible to be different and the same.

We are all walking contradictions of what “normal” looks like. Let humanity and love win.

Judy’s note: I had to share with you this Facebook message I just received from my friend Candace. This wonderful message came with this note: “The author (unknown) is encouraging copy/paste if you like.” I hope it is true that the anonymous author has asked us to copy and paste it. If you know different, let me know and I will cite the author or remove it.

Jade Plant Babies and Visitor: FOTD Mar 16, 2021

I love how jade plants replicate easily from every shed leaf.  This walking stick visitor didn’t seem interested in dining on it. Just curious, perhaps. Anyone know what you’d call fifteen siblings born at the same time from the same mother? Quinceuplets?

What Are You Doing At Midnight?

What are you doing at midnight? Whatever it is, take some photos. Write a few lines. Scribble a poem. Sketch us a sketch. Write a song. Dance a dance. Cook us a midnight treat, mix us a twelve o’clock cocktail. Whatever you are doing at midnight, post it on your blog and share it with us by posting a pingback or making a link back to my comment section..

These are my actions in the hour leading up to midnight on Mar 13, 2021 in San Juan Cosala, Jalisco, Mexico. (On Lake Chapala near Guadalajara.)

Initially, I was fussing over the succulent wall, that I’d changed yesterday, again switching things around. (Click on photos to enlarge and read captions.)

Now, what are you doing at midnight?
