Generational Redux

As I sit in my art studio surveying the drawers full of the tiny objects I use for my assemblages, I often think of my Grandma Jane. Midwife, mother, knitter, crocheter, tatter, embroiderer, Chinese Checkers player, master at whipping up meals making use of whatever was at hand, in her old age she became a hoarder and was given to confusing liniment with vanilla when baking cakes. Consummate martyr, she was fond of muttering something in Dutch that to those of us other than my dad, who spoke Dutch, sounded exactly like “Mama milk my goat.” It came to be a family retort anytime one of us seemed to be feeling sorry for herself, and it was not until I returned from college, amazed that none of my friends had ever heard the phrase before, that my dad laughingly admitted that what she was actually saying was the equivalent of “Mama might be dead!” in Dutch. It was his little joke on us that he had never corrected our misquoting of the phrase.

Toward the end of her life, my grandma was not an especially pleasant person to be around and although we took her meals to her, had her over for Sunday dinner and holidays and took her shopping and for rides, we spent less and less time with her. At my 50th class reunion, a woman who had been in my class at school who had grown up in a house near my grandma, who came from a family of 13 children, told of how they’d all go over to grandma’s house to watch TV at night, and it was comforting to know she had not been as lonely as she always professed to be. As a little girl, I, too, had loved to visit her as she struggled to make me into the knitter or stitcher I’d never be, but as I grew into my teen years and as she became less of a pleasant companion, we spent less and less time together. She died at the age of 96 when I was 16.

Buried Treasure

She always wore a navy dress of heavy crepe with dozens of small black buttons down the front. Her jewelry, turned dull black by some body chemistry that I share, lay abandoned in her dresser drawer, the food stains spilling down her front, her new adornment.

Trunks in her house were filled with ill-stitched pillowcases, her handiwork rendered less carefully year-by-year as her eyesight failed— her useless glasses repaired at the bridge with thick amber glue she bought by the box to sell but never did.

Every Christmas, her gift to me was one more from her cache of dozens of small plastic lamps powered by batteries— another failed scheme received in the mail that had promised to swell her fortune.

Her china cabinet was crowded to each edge with 96 years of carnival glass, milk glass and heavy Dutch beer mugs, green dishes from soap boxes and cut glass jelly goblets— treasures doled out to us one per visit towards the end, as though she sensed the inescapable. The day of the fire, she didn’t want to leave her things: canning jars full of Cracker Jack prizes and other treasures mined from her pockets after a neighborhood stroll. They carried her, kicking and screaming, from her house and put her in our car. “All right, old girl,” my dad said, and drove her 50 miles to the nearest residence for the elderly.

I remember all of this after a Christmas gathering with friends as I clean food spills
from my Mexican-embroidered blouse: how they bulldozed her house with most of her treasures inside and built a hospital on the land; how it, too, now lies abandoned in the dying town, its cobwebbed rooms giving no testament to that which lies below: trunks filled with yellowing embroidered sheets and pillowcases, shelf upon shelf of Mason jars filled with the collection of her lifetime: buried riches whose containers have acquired a worth far beyond the trinkets they contain.

Longing: Non-WordPress Prompt for the Day

jdb photo

Knowing this was the first time in over 4 years that I haven’t had a WordPress daily prompt to follow, forgottenman gave me this one.  If you’d like to join me, just post your blog and then give a link to your blog in my comments section. Being that this is also Open Link Night in dVerse poets, if you are writing a poem, you can also link it HERE. Be sure to use the Mr. Linky bar given on this site to link your poem.

I will list links to other new prompt sites as I discover them tomorrow.

Longing

This morning’s church bells’ constant bongings
woke me to familiar longings.
Coded as they were in dreams,
when I awoke, they split their seams
and spilled into my conscious thought.
Futile to yearn for what I’m not.
No longer young or lithe or trim,
no passions spilling from my brim.
No husband, mother, father, lover.
No guardians to watch and hover.
I’ve grown away from most of life,
connections severed as with a knife.
Still, I do not long for these.
I do not pray on bended knees
for what is past or what is lost,
for I know pining’s pain and cost.
My longing, now, is just to see
what life’s plot is left to me.

The prompt today was longing.

Requiem for the Daily Post

Has anyone noticed that although the final WordPress Daily Prompt word, ever, is “retrospective,” that the word given on the link URL is “afterthought?”  Did they determine a final prompt word of “afterthought,” then have afterthoughts and change it to “retrospective?” And if so, why?  In considering, in retrospect, the many years of Daily Post responses, did they decide that our responses were not of sufficient value to continue the endeavor?  Was it too much work to continue to post a word a day and give us a place to view each other’s responses?  Is this site in competition with another they hope to deflect our interest to?  Was the flood of protest on the forum totally overlooked?  Does anyone at WordPress ever even read the forum, or in fact, have they ever read our posts on The Daily Post?

This is the second time in my ten years or so of dealing with social sites that I have become totally disillusioned with a site that I had considered to be both different and fun and a cut above much of what I find on the internet. The first time was when OkCupid sold out to Match.Com, who quickly abolished the journals, the awards, the survey sites, the creative surveys made by members, and finally the forum. It has become simply another commercially-driven match-up site. No longer is it a place for fun and creative interchange whose additional value was that one could potentially meet someone that might become a partner as well.

It seems to me that this is exactly what WordPress is doing.  I will await the announcement that it has been sold to Facebook or Microsoft or Match.com or any of the other huge conglomerates who exist to turn our thoughts and dreams and senses of humor and wishes to make some sort of of real human contact into another commercial endeavor calculated to make the most amount of money with the least amount of heart.

I have always been impressed by what used to be called the WordPress “happiness engineers” who made contact when my WordPress help button on my favorites bar was pushed.  Perhaps they are still there, lost in the flood of changes which have started and will probably continue, washing away my old illusions of WordPress being an organization that really cared about what I will now think of as their “customers.” Since the beginning of my blog, I have felt a part of a larger community.  Now it would seem that the “leaders” of that community have left the building, along with the daily prompt.

It is a small irony that our last prompt word of “retrospective” rhymes beautifully with both “reflective” and “defective.”  Would that it had been elective.

If there had been an afterthought
about the change WordPress has wrought
by saying that our prompt will not
be a thing that can be got–
either by free means or by bought,
perhaps we would not all be caught
here with throats all in a knot,
with no more place where we can jot
all the words that we once thought
would be a means where we’d be taught—
where thirsty minds could draw a draught
and newcomers given a shot
at adding to the communal pot.
But now, I fear, our dreams are fraught
with the sadness of our present lot.
R.I.P., Daily Post.  once fresh and hot.
Dead, buried, left to rot!!!!!!!

Please continue to make an issue of the demise of the daily prompt on the forum. Perhaps someone will notice. Perhaps they will listen. Perhaps WordPress has not decided to turn its back on those foolish few of us who sought communion in our communications. In the meantime, Curious steph is starting up a prompt site.  Follow her ***** HERE *****to stay in the loop for instructions about how to join.

The final prompt, it seems, for WordPress is retrospective.

Always a fashion plate, always outspoken, million-dollar-smile. She added her beauty and brilliance to every occasion she graced. Another lakeside icon has passed away from us. R.I.P. Virginia.

For a more detailed view of Virginia’s life, here is her obituary in the Guadalajara Reporter:

This is Chapala

In case you are curious about why I would choose to live in Mexico, given its present bad press, here is a video about the place where I live that might explain why.

From Little Things Big Things Grow

This is the best and most persuasive argument for WordPress continuing the Daily Prompt that I have seen. I want to thank Tracy at Reflections of an Untidy Mind for caring enough to take the time to write it.

Broken-hearted that after tomorrow, there will be no daily WordPress prompt!

Please Join Me in Asking WordPress Not to Abolish the Daily Prompt!!

I am starting a forum campaign to prevail upon WordPress not to drop the Daily Prompt.  Please comment HERE to agree with me and perhaps help effect a reversal of their decision.

Not only has it been an invaluable aid to me in jump-starting me in my writing each day, but it was also a way to find new bloggers to add to my favorites list. Without it, I will once again just fall back on my favorites list without much of a way of meeting new bloggers.

Please comment both on the forum and in comments below.
