Fatal Obsession

My father is an ogre and rather hard-of-hearing,
but I had the silly idea I could rise above my rearing.
All my friends were human and I had a strange obsession
for screening them from tendencies I had in my possession.

The result was that I scored a beau inimitably grand—
the sort of perfect boyfriend I thought I’d never land.
Vibrant, handsome, wealthy and inordinately smart,
he was the sort of catch that would melt any ogress heart.

In short, I could barely believe that Avery was mine,
but when I brought him pridefully home with me to dine,
after the aperitifs, the soup and the tossed salad,
I noticed that my father was looking somewhat pallid.

I stepped into the kitchen to find him food more savory,
only to return to find that dad had eaten Avery!!
I cried, “How could you do this to one who’s so indelible?
“I tried to prove you wrong,” he said. “I thought you said inedible!”

 

Note: An ogre (feminine: ogress) is a legendary monster usually depicted as a large, hideous, man-like being that eats ordinary human beings, Ogres are closely linked with giants and with human cannibals in mythology.

For almost 10 years, perhaps more, Pepe has been coming to my house to give me a massage.Since foot surgery, my 1 1/2 hour weekly massage has turned into a leg and foot massage only. Pure heaven. That is, it was, before Zoe stole the show by scoring her own massage.

Squares Challenge this month, we are looking for square photographs that are;

  • Differing from the usual or not happening often (ie oddballs, the exceptions and follies)

Wall flowers–– Bougainvillea: FOTD, Feb 21, 2022

Cats always choose the exact right place to pose themselves. This is Ollie photobombing the bougainvillea. Why is it odd? First of all, because it is rare to see him without his sister, Kukla, and secondly because this is the first time he has been the one to greet me up on the wall when I return home. Usually it is Kukla. Or is it because that’s an odd number of leaves on the bougainvillea bush? Check and see.

Bedtime Stories

When I hear scuffling in the ceiling and scratching in the wall,
fluttering at the windows and steps out in the hall,
Mommy says it’s mice and birds to calm my excitation,
but Daddy tells me other things that swell imagination.

There are ghost doors in the attic and temples in the sky
that creatures will spring out of to join me by and by.
My dad will weave their stories and spread them out for me.
He’ll just open up his mouth and that will set them free.

When I think of all the stories, there’s such anticipation
that I can feel my heart boom and hear its palpitation.
Nighttime is less scary with Mommy or with Nurse,
but bedtime without stories is definitely worse.

Behind Bars

After one guest left my front gate slightly ajar and another absent-mindedly unlocked the front door of my house when she went up to the casita, someone entered my house during the night and stole a computer off the table right next to my sofa, where another houseguest was soundly sleeping. After that, I had bars put on all the doors and windows and I haven’t had a break-in since. Someone did crawl over my wall and into my compound and went over my other wall to enter my neighbor’s open kitchen window, however, and stole her husband’s wallet and her purse, which he dumped in my yard after extracting the cash.

And so, I’ve learned the safety of having better security than your neighbors! I keep every door and window locked, even when I am home. I can open the sliders and windows for ventilation and to see out and still be secure. And if you are wondering, no, it doesn’t feel like I’m in jail. I don’t even really notice the bars. I kept them simple on purpose, so they don’t really attract attention away from the view.

I am also careful to keep computer passwords safe and when I record them to remember them, have them in code based on personal memories which only I can figure out.  Hopefully,

As for computer security, hopefully I’ve figured out the scams and delete them without opening.

Zoe is not too fond of the bars that keep her in from stealing the cat food.

Payback

When Hal at the feed store hired a new clerk,
he was friendly enough, but a bit of a jerk.
He quickly filled orders for packets of seed
of a kilo or so, but he didn’t accede
to requests for help out with a heavier sack.
He had an excuse as he claimed a bad back.
Then later that rascal would  go to the gym
and work out with weights far heavier than him.
Of course word got around and was cause for his layoff.
Good news for his back which now has every day off!

Photo thanks to Harriet Hart. This bag actually goes over my shoulder.  Zoe sleeps
on my nightgown inside and also has a toy there. Most of the time, however,
her head peeks out of the bag at the top so she may be seen by her admirers.

What one brews in the teapot in order to degust,
another views with horror just short of real disgust.
That painting that is cherished by one may well be hated
by another viewer who fails to be elated.
Be it arias or rock songs, be it reggae, jazz or rap,
a singer loved by one, someone else may judge as crap.
The alluvion of culture that daily is collected
and cherished by one person, by another is rejected.
So what’s popular will change  from day to day or year to year
according to the palate, the vision or the ear.
