Sweet Dove

Sweet Dove

Sweet peas and petunias fill the gutters on this morning,
and bluebirds buzz your head and land on shoulders without warning.
Curmudgeons sprout wide smiles and doubters grow proactive.
And even grim Chernobyl becomes less radioactive.

Guns forsake their targets and missiles stop their tracking,
and mathematicians give up seeking what they’re lacking.
It’s Universal Peace Day, and for once all enter in
as the hand that holds the grenade pauses to pull the pin.

Prompt words today are curmudgeon, proactive, apocryphal, target, gutter and morning. Image by Sunguk Kim on Unsplash.

Peace on Earth in ’22

Peace on Earth in ’22

If only we could clear the world of every tragic issue
as though we’d wiped the slate clean with one gigantic tissue.
If Pollyanna ruled the world, there’d be no end of cheer.
There’d be no hungry children, no drunks crying in their beer.
But in our potential Shangri-La, perfection’s not to be.
The playing field’s not even and there is no guarantee
that things will all be equal regarding happiness.
In fact with every passing year, the world’s more of a mess.

Yet before we shed this mortal coil, there’s something we can do
to try to bring some happiness to this human zoo.
Before this year is over, it would be stupendous
if each and every one of us could do something tremendous
like deflect a bit of gossip or curb a caustic quip,
resist an impulse to defraud or cheat or bilk or gyp,
see a foreign culture as exotic, not as wrong,
join hands with the universe and try to get along.

As this old year’s winding down, if we could make a pact
not to steal or plunder, not to blame nor to react
in anger to each other. Treat each woman as our mother
and try to view each man on earth as our potential brother,
then maybe things would straighten out and throughout the Earth
our population would be healed and all would feel their worth.
Warfare would be abolished and kindness seize the day.
Oh that this was reality and we could find our way.

Advice to Self and Others

If your writing is inciting
civil discord and inviting
calls to action
by reaction
of one faction

or another, become a brother
by listening to one another.

Try a blend
of words that mend.
Work upon a pending rending
of ill thoughts you’ve been extending.
Try to start a happy ending.

Choose a task that takes you higher.
Shed your mask and bend your ire.
Anger’s such a bitter pill
that words can poison, bite and kill.

Still your vitriol and follow
kinder thoughts into that hollow
where the gentle grass is waving,
where we go to still our raving,
heeding nature’s gentle call
to save ourselves before our fall.

Here to raise the cup of peace.
That fragile glass that brings surcease.
And by that small sip that you sample,
you can be the good example
that draws another to slake their thirst
and start the journey to best from worst.

Oops.. nearly missed last week’s Wordle prompts. Here they are:
writing, civil, bend, pill, mask, follow, glass, still, call, save, blend, sample.

Music of the Spheres II: If Mankind Were A Thought Bubble

Music of the Spheres II:
If Mankind Were A Thought Bubble

What else might nature have done
if it had wanted to have fun?
Could it have made a man, instead
of hair, with hands above his head?
To grab the brush from off the shelf
so it could simply groom itself?
Could the music of the spheres
have been reduced to human ears?
A sort of cosmic saxophone
that altered mankind bone on bone?
Kindness bubbling up from ooze
to be the quality we’d choose
instead of hate and greed and trouble?
What if man were just a bubble
rising through the ocean’s murk
to rise to air and go to work
to turn into a different sort
of human driven to comport
himself with generosity?
You for you and me for me
lost to perpetuity?
What a different world we’d see.

All for one and one for all
precluding mankind’s final fall.
How I wish this fantasy
was all that I would have it be.
Not just a dream within my head
but how things really worked instead.

The NaPoWriMo prompt was to watch this video and write a poem based upon it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX_xh2do3eM

Masquerade

Masquerade

In a world that seems a satire of itself,
we come out of our separate closets masked,
as though nature is warning us
not to reveal too much, too soon.

Much as we desire a safer world,
and as much as I yearn to bring you
tidings of peace and good will,

peace is not a goal accomplished,
so though I mask my face,
I do not mask my words.

We are silhouettes
striking out from our shadows,

sharing our pain in retribution.
Hearts fester in their isolation
and communicate through violence—
blowing up the world
they don’t belong to,
 easier
than the heart’s
unmasking.

In blasting their way into our world,
they pull us after them,
and we sink
to the lowest common denominator—
violence, hate and greed.

If wishes were action,
perhaps the world could heal,
but, in fact,
it heels
to the commands
of those who seek to stain and plunder.

My wish for the new year’s birth?
As hearts of darkness

seek to lead the way,
let some bright flash
that is a part of all of us
ignite in common
to conquer their shadows
and strip all masks away.

Prompt words today are satire, silhouette, wishes and tidings.

Singlish

Singlish

When Papa grabbed his squeezebox and baby hit the gong,
all the other children ran up to play along.
Henry played the drums and Molly the kazoo.
Oscar blew the tuba ’til he started to turn blue.

Sally on the saxophone and Henry on the flute,
Wanda on the trumpet went rootie tootie toot.
Mama led the singing and Grandma hummed along
as one-by-one the children joined them in their song.

All the kids went swaying, rocking on their toes
as they sang a song embellished by cardinals and crows.
The cattle in the pasture joined in with soothing moos—
the cockerels crooning descants with their cockadoodledoos.

The mourning doves sang background, telling of their woes,
while all the little sparrows cheeped neatly from their rows.
The horses voiced their  whinnies and sheep all baaaahed along
until the  world surrounding us had joined in on the song.

Woodpeckers beat percussion until our song was done,
joining us in music that proved that we were one.
Goldfinches and burros were next to join the throng,
all speaking the same language in this singalong.

I heard it from the mockingbird who heard it from the jay.
It was a pretty chorus that rose up from that day.
Now most days thereafter, we’ve sung in harmony.
If everyone would join us, how grand the world could be.
