Reflections

I think I was 12 or 13 when this was taken, playing dress-up in my older sister’s dress!

Reflections

I do not seek out mirrors, for I don’t like what I see.
That pudgy older woman barely resembles me.
I prefer reflection of the memory kind,
rooting around within my brain to see what I can find.

Old lovers all hang out there, frozen as they were,
and when I break into their worlds, I create quite a stir,
for I am as I was as well, less inches ’round my waist,
my hair much longer and my skirt length much more to their taste.

I’m thinking just how fortunate it is that we should meet,
both of us together on this familiar street.
What are the chances we’d be here at the selfsame time––
drawn in from our different lives to join here in this rhyme?

Then of course I realize it is by my orchestration
rather than a miracle of synchronization.
At first, our talk is  shallow, our conversation bland.
What causes  a big flurry is when he takes my hand.

It’s then that I remember what it is I miss.
It’s not the conversation, but rather it’s that kiss
that sent my senses spinning off to some future land
where I imagined he would ask my father for my hand.

But when that event came for real, that time for plans and rings,
I found my mind was turning to many other things.
College and then travel to many foreign strands—
things that wouldn’t happen if we wore wedding bands.

So we parted directions—off to different lives,
adventures with different spouses, children with different wives.
Building separate futures that led us both to this:
to fifty years thereafter and that same remembered kiss!

In regards to puzzles, what’s your choice: jigsaw, crossword, word search, mazes, logic or numeric puzzles, something else, or nothing?

I love doing jigsaw puzzles with my sister and brother-in-law at Xmas. Visiting friends usually get sucked into the addiction as well. This was a tradition between my sister and me when we were growing up. I also love logic problems and crossword puzzles. Writing rhymed and metered poetry is definitely a puzzle as well and actually my favorite.

List at least five favorite treats and it doesn’t necessarily have to be food.

Movies, Spider Solitaire, Thai Food, Ice Cream, Road Trips, Mexican Train.

What is your favorite type of dog? (can be anything from a specific breed, a stuffed animal or character in a movie)

I love little dogs but with two exceptions seem to have always had bigger ones. I’ve always had dogs that just showed up and adopted me so I’ve never had much of a choice. I have a black Lab mix and a Scottie now. They are both pretty cool.

What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week?  Feel free to use a quote, a photo, a story, or even a combination.

The Harvest

Most of my lifetime, I’ve gone for the “zing,”
Excitement and novelty were my main thing.
I wrung out of life all the juice I could wring–—
all the diversions existence could bring,
constantly reaching out for the gold ring.

Life without change seemed pointless and dull.
I wanted my life without any lull,
so I greedily sucked all the fruit from its hull,
finding on my own what I needed to cull—
which things I should keep and which to annul.

As I fell to the ground after soaring the skies,
I sorted successes from my mere tries.
I learned from my tendencies to aggrandize,
gave up on false dreams to follow the wise,
and sometimes I managed to capture the prize.

Only now as my life has finally unwound
have I gained some perspective and finally found
that all those wild oats I have sown may be ground
to release all the lessons so carefully bound.
What is seeded in ounces may yield by the pound.

Great Pains

IMG_0329

4:15  A.M.

Nothing in life competes with pain.
It wins the race time and again.
Compared with every other force,
it is the thing that stays the course.

All the usual distractions
are in the end, merely abstractions.
Just one reality remains.
Avoidance measures it disdains.

Though we make take great pains to miss it,
in vain we toil to dismiss it.
All else in life becomes inane
when its competitor is pain.
