Things My Mother Taught Me

Things My Mother Taught Me

I’ve used you as a paradigm of what I want to be,
and for those years I had a child, raised her as you raised me.
Used your fine discernment in establishing the rules.
Taught her to respect herself and not to suffer fools.
Issued all the necessary caveats and warnings,
tucked her into bed at night and rousted her most mornings.
Help her when she needed it and then I let her be,
for the truest gift you give a child is when you set her free.

Prompt words are caveat, paradigm, necessity and discernment.

The A to Z Guide to Phobias

The A to Z Guide to Phobias

Beanophobia: A well-founded fear when they serve baked beans at the banquet before your Jr.prom.
Deanophobia: That long-ago fear in college that you’d be caught sneaking into your dorm after hours.
Geneophobia: The fear that Ancestry.Com will unearth something dastardly in your family tree.
Jeanophobia: Your grandmother’s fear that you’ll show up in shredded jeans for you aunt’s wedding.
Keeneophobia: An unexplainable dislike of Nancy Drew Mysteries.
Leanophobia: An iffy excuse for breaking your diet.
Meanophobia: What keeps you as far away as possible from the snotty group of girls in high school.
Preenophobia: Your stubborn refusal to sneak into the girls room during the interval of the movie to check out your hair and lipstick.
Queenophobia: A co-occurring disorder suffered by Anti-Anglophiles.
Sceneophobia: That feeling of dread when you let your boyfriend talk you into going to a slasher movie.
Teenophobia: A common phobia suffered by the parents of children between the ages of 12 and 20.
Weanophobia: the reluctance of first-time mothers to give up nursing.
Weeniephobia: A debilitating fear of hot dogs that causes one to avoid fairs and football games.
Xenophobia: An unreasonable dread that one might have been born in 1966 instead of 1965.

No surprise that the  prompt today was Xenophobia, Image by Vadim Bogulov on Unsplash.

Dahlia: FOTD Apr 14, 2023

Since I’m rather low on “different” flowers right now, I searched my archives for a flower labelled “Unused.” This one came up, but when I typed its number into my WP media file, I found I’d published it seven years ago. It was pretty enough that I decided to publish it again anyway. Cee does say we should dig into our archives!!! Makes me want to go out and find dahlias to plant. It’s been a long time since I’ve had dahlias in my garden. Unfortunately, the little dogs will probably eat them. They are big salad fans.

A Flowery Metaphoric Rejection on a Bad Cold Day

When it comes to heroes, I prefer mine picaresque–
not one that clouds his meanings in terms more picturesque.

“We could make some upbeat music?” Your intent I can’t detect,
so I must entreat you, try to use words more direct.

All my friends have warned me you’re desirous of my hand,
but you seem to seek my membership in some sort of band.

I, too, can speak in metaphors, admiddedly not choral,
for instead of musical, my imagery is floral.

I cannot speak concisely for I have ad awful code.
But as to our conjoining,? Gotta snip it in the node!

(Disclaimer: I had written this all in lingo that sounded like a bad cold, but it seemed indecipherable, so I reverted to just using it in the last two lines.)

Prompts today are upbeat, picturesque, direct, entreat, node and membership.

The leafcutter ants have not been stealing my bougainvillea as much this year. Thus, this healthy crop.

Intimations of Mortality

Intimations of Mortality

Though I am still active, for sure I’m not my best.
Whereas once I boogied, now I find I’d rather rest.
I know I’m winding down for sure but I feel I must
achieve those things I said I’d do before I bite the dust.
While I’m waiting to be cancelled, I’ve agreed that I’ll  be wise.
My finale bears no stigma, for everybody dies.

Prompt words today are  wise, agree, finale, stigma, active and cancelled.
