About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Murdo School Reunion and Family Reunion, July, 2022 #3 (and Final)

My sister Patti sent me this photo to prove that I was actually at the school reunion as well. Since she took this photo, I am actually in it.

And here are some photos taken at the LandMark Motel the day after the reunion, when my family collected to bury my sister Batty Jo’s Ashes in the family plot in the Murdo Cemetery.

Why am I wearing those funny lips? Because I wanted to smile and this is what I would have looked like if I had:

I’d lost a crown the last night of the reunion when I tried to open a packet of sour cream with my teeth in the Buffalo Restaurant and Bar. I managed to replace it with a small strip torn off a polident strip but alas ended up forgetting and crunching down on it when I took a bite of muffin this morning and it was crushed into disuse.  Below is how I lookedin a family photo when I remembered to close my mouth when I smiled:

Tomorrow, back to Sheridan and an emergency visit to Patti’s dentist.

Born-Again Gourmet

Born-Again Gourmet

Once I was a candidate for gourmet school flunky,
sporting the dubious honor of number one food junkie.
But now I’m basically looking for a way to curb
my appetite for junk food in favor of superb
cuisine that suits the palates of gourmands and gourmets.
I’ll impress headwaiters with my knowledge of patés,
place orders for obscure foods that will startle and amaze.
Then I can claim my trashy choice in food was just a phase.

Prompt words today are: head, basically, candidate, activate and superb.Image by Mads Eneqvist on Unsplash.

Building Dreams: Wordle 561

Building Dreams

The spirits of birds hum from the trees
in fours and fives and twos and threes.
Their trickling songs dispel glum thoughts
and raise tired bones up from their cots

to run and skip and dance and play—
those former actions for which they pray.
In myths of old lost spirits howl,
vampires bite and werewolves growl,

but in my stories, wood nymphs prance
and willowy fairies join their dance.
Thus do we choose what we believe
and live the dream life that we weave.

For Wordle 561 the prompts are: glum pray birds myths growl bones trickling hum spirits willowy run lost three.  Image by Anthony Tran on Unsplash.

The Building of a Legend

The Building of a Legend

When there’s an event that attracts attention
worthy of notice and worthy of mention,
no matter how silly or boring or gory,
it’s a regional custom to concoct a story
that exceeds pure fact and creates a tale
with additional details added without fail
that with the recital of each new re-teller
becomes much more luminous, sadder or sweller
than at the last telling and so to the credit
of the last person who heard and resaid it,
it reflects the memory and education,
the sense of humor and imagination
of each one who passes the story along
as anecdote, joke or novel or song.
Thus are legends made of the simplest act
by using our fancy to swell out pure fact.

Restorative Rhyme

Restorative Rhyme

When life gets too busy and I wish that I had wings
to get me free from obligations and off to greater things,
away from lists, committees and everything that’s pending,
everything that in the modern world seems to be trending,
I fly off in my thoughts instead and write a silly verse
in words I put together, absurd and even worse.
And yet in its reciting, somehow it’s rehabilitating,
wiping out those serious thoughts that were debilitating.

Prompt words are: wings, trend, great, debilitating and busy.
