Allenda’s Gardenia: Flower of the Day, Sept.20, 2016

img_6267

The deer had eaten most of the flowers in my friend Allenda’s hillside gardens, but this gardenia and a few mums had escaped a place in their salad table.  More flowerless photos will follow in a subsequent post.

April asked if gardenias are edible.  Yes, in fact they are said to have a sweet taste when eaten raw.  For a recipe for crystallized gardenia petals, go here:

More Sedum: Flower of the Day, Sept. 19, 2016

Ms. Bee, Ms. Bee, how much more lush could a sedum be?

(An interesting fact revealed to me by a bee scholar is that worker bees are females without ovaries, not males, so my former usage of Mr. Bee was incorrect.  Now who would know that???  He who knows all: Forgottenman!!!)

Imperfect Darling: Flower of the Day, Sept. 17, 2016 (Echinacea)

To my eye, this bedraggled and pockmarked echinacea bloom has a beauty all its own.

Not the same flower as a few days ago, but possibly the same wasp.

Nasturtium: Flower of the Day, Sept 15, 2016

Orange nasturtiums were the first flowers I ever planted myself, from seed, in the apartment I frequented for a year while I got my masters degree. They totally took over the soil by my back door stoop. I loved their cheery hardiness, but for some reason I’ve never planted them again. These are the first nasturtiums I’ve seen since that weren’t in a salad. Love the yellow.  Wish I’d asked for some seed.

Hollyhock: Flower of the Day Sept. 14, 2016

My very first favorite flower.  They grew tall beside our back stoop and every summer, we’d make Hollyhock dolls out of them. I found these outside the “Anne of Green Gables” house on Prince Edward Island.  Click on first photo to enlarge.
