When I asked Dan and Rhonda to make me some deviled eggs, I guess I should have given more specific instructions!!!!! Note the avocado horns.  Eight o’clock in the morning, and spooked already!

Last Request

Version 2jdbphoto

Last Request

I pine, I anguish, yearn and ache;
yet don’t allow myself to bake.
I don’t dessert for calorie’s sake,
for if I do, my floorboards quake.
Yet one request I’d like to make.
When that last sleep I finally take,
if I should die before I wake,
please let my last meal include cake!

Today’s prompt word was “Cake.”

High Cholesterol

High Cholesterol

Bake the pies and roast the beast.
Call your friends from west and east.
They’ll enjoy the food, at least,
as from sparse greens my meal is pieced.
For I fear my life’s long feast
has, by necessity, now ceased!

Premature Ingestion

egg-1364869_960_720Christine Goodnough issued a challenge for me to download this photo and use it as a prompt so here goes.  (Permission was given to download without attribution.)

Premature Ingestion

Poached or coddled, scrambled, fried––
a potential chick has died.
You have no patience, that is clear
for the breakfast you hold dear
forestalls a lot of finger-lickin.’
This could have been a whole fried chicken!

Fishless Chips

I received the below new lunch menu from a local restaurant via email immediately before reading the daily prompt, which was “Flourish.”  It was inevitable that the two would merge.

A NEW
LUNCH MENU is being offered from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Fish & Chips with Coleslaw
  • Burritos ( Shrimp or Fish)
  • Chimichangas (Shrimp or Fish)
  • Tacos Shrimp or Fish
  • Large Salad with  Shrimp

Fishless Chips

Never have I had a wish
for any kind of seafood dish––
fillet of flounder or tuna knish.
The only menu I find delish
is piscine-free, served with a flourish.
So if this bod you wish to nourish,
just french fry spuds and skip the fish!

is, I fear, devoid of fish.https://dailypost.wordpress.com/prompts/flourish/

Baker’s Dozen

Have you ever wondered where the phrase came from?  I had an epiphany moment when I was baking cookies a month ago, then forgot about it until I again baked cookies yesterday.  It was then that I realized if you place the balls in rows of 3, then 2, then 3, then 2, then 3 on a regular cookie sheet to leave room for expansion, you can fit exactly 13 cookies on the sheet!  Voila!! A baker’s dozen!!! I perhaps could have discovered this by looking it up on Google, but much more fun to discover such facts on your own!

Blueberry, Blueberry, Blackbird Pie: NaPoWriMo 2016, Day 26

DSCN1128

Blueberry, Blueberry, Blackbird Pie

Gotta get a cookie. Gotta eat some pie.
Gotta have some sugar, do or die.
Grab a fork and grab a spoon.
Sugar shack opening pretty soon.

Hey lolly hey lolly, blueberry pie.
Hope to have some by and by.

Old Mother Crank put a pie up on the shelf.
Thought she’d eat it all herself.
Along came a blackbird who grabbed a bit of crust,
then the whole damn pie as the old lady cussed.

Hey lolly, hey lolly, no more pie.
Blackbird made it go bye bye.

Old Mother Fussbudget loaded up her gun.
She didn’t have pie, but she was gonna have some fun.
When she spied that blackbird way up high,
she fired her gun up in the sky.

Hey lolly, hey lolly, no berry pie.
Just that blackbird winging through the sky.

Now old Mother Wigglewaggy baked another pie.
It’ll be ready in the blinking of an eye.
She had two pieces, then she had a third,
Since she didn’t have fruit, she used the bird!!

Hey lolly, hey lolly, no bird pie.
I prefer my blackbird served on rye!

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt was to write a call and response poem.

Foreign Food

Foreign Food

In the garden or on the hoof,
in the lake or on the roof,
we grow it, herd it, shoot it, hook it.
Pick it, wash it, chop it, cook it.

Wherever we see food, we take it.
Stir it, spit it, fry or bake it.
In Japan is the exception.
Some ancient chef had a conception

that he would not cook the fish–
just serve it raw upon the dish.
It is a strange way to be fed–
to eat a fish that’s merely dead!

In African countries, I have found,
they build a fire on the ground
and cook their food in cauldrons there
flavored with spices hot and rare.

In Sicily, the mafia bosses
favor rich tomato sauces.
First they’re fed by wife or mother,
Then they go out and kill each other.

Mexicans use corn instead
of wheat to make their daily bread.
They fold it around beans or meat
and chilis to turn up the heat!

America’s a country where
there’s food from every country there.
What’s unique in our repast
is that we want our food here fast!

The NaPoWriMo prompt was to write a poem about food, and the WordPress daily prompt was faraway.  I’m going to try to combine them!

Refresh Me

Refresh Me

If you hope to make conjunction
with me at your little function,
serve potato chips with dip
and also, I’d appreciate a sip
of Diet Coke or Seven Up
in a waxy paper cup.

No one likes a fete that lacks
sweet or salty little snacks.
Pizza, nachos and popcorn, too,
are appropriate things to chew.
Leave caviar to lords and kings.
I’d much rather have onion rings.

Refreshments are an absolute must.
Without them, parties are a bust.
And any date becomes an upper
when it includes a little supper.
So if you wish to win my heart,
my stomach is the place to start.

Carrot Attack

It is 1:15 in the morning and somewhere down the block there is a very loud party going on––lots of singing along with loud sound systems and girls screaming. Dan’s watching Bill Maher on his notebook in the sala, Maggie’s gone to bed upstairs, Rhonda’s gone to bed downstairs and I’m cracking the crop over these photos I took earlier tonight that you will soon see below.

For months, I’ve been wanting to try out one of Leland’s scratch recipes that he posts weekly on his blog. Unfortunately, I always lack at least two of the ingredients; but the fact that I have an excellent baker visiting just now caused me to get organized enough to have butter, eggs, baking powder, flour, oranges, carrots and powdered sugar all in my house at the same time. The result is that Rhonda baked Leland’s carrot cookies and then taste-tested them with the help of Dan, Maggie and me. Here are the results:
