Bugbear

My bugbear really is a bear, but it does more than bug me.
When I take a walk in woods, I fear that one will hug me.
I shake in terror every time I hear a dry branch crack,
afraid that I might have a bear descend upon my back.
My footsteps are deliberate. I do not want attention,
fearing that a grizzly bear will demand my detention.

At church camp I stayed with the group as we walked to chapel,
imagining a black bear with his sharp claws like a scalpel
ripping through my backpack and shredding through my tee,
getting down to business. Getting down to me.
When father saw something was wrong as he heard my confession,
he said that i could tell him all, that it was his profession

to listen to the foibles and the fears of kids like me.
Whatever worries I might have, he could set me free.
And so I told everything—my excessive worry
that I might encounter something clawed and toothed and furry.
Then he disqualified my fears and did it in a hurry,
by saying that God put no bears in central Missouri!!!!

Computer Updates

Modern life is a rigmarole, day after day.
It radiates chaos for which you must pay.
If you’re hindered by change, then this isn’t your world.
Week after week, more updates are hurled
that change the position of all that you do.
How do I find “send?” I haven’t a clue!

They make no provision for those who are old
who have to remember instructions they’re told.
And just when they’ve memorized everything new,
all the things that they need have been placed out of view.
I find it uncouth that the programmers make
change after change just for change’s sake.

What is the purpose of transforming a word
into a symbol? I find it absurd.
Then putting it somewhere we don’t think to look
so we have to survey every corner and nook
just to perform a task we once found easy?
It makes us confused and a little bit queasy

that computer techs constantly accelerate
change so we’re always just out of date!!!!
Does it give them a lift and make them feel jolly
that they’re making their predecessors melancholy
for the old times when all the things found yesterday
were in the same place when looked for today????

Does anyone else keep getting the “Exchange Password Required” message dozens of times a day from Microsoft??? It is driving me crazy!!!!

For Leya: Desktop Confusion

Leya, it was just at first glance that  I thought your desk was a photo of mine. Big differences, yet some similarities. Mine changes project to project and two of  these are much messier than your lovely collage.  (For those curious about this post, I had remarked to Leya that at first glance I thought her photo of her desktop was my desktop. She asked to see mine and I couldn’t figure out another way to show her my messy desktops. The window, the view, the color of the desk and the  number of items on it are perhaps the only similarities but at first glance, can you see my flashing thought????) The last photo is of Leya’s desk.

Winter Provisioning

The cows are in the pasture, plump but in the nude,
watching for their daily hay bales to be renewed.
My prestigious assignment is to drive the truck
while Daddy tips the hay bales off, for he has all the luck!
The cows think he’s their savior while I’m just the chauffeur.
So though my appearance does not cause a stir,
when they see his welcome face, they speed by in a blur
to break into the hay bales that my dad has spread,
and that is how in winter, daily, our cows are fed!!!

Ruth and Max Bloomquist in Concert at Wendy and Steve Edmond’s House

The concert was staged in a beautiful setting
on a hill above Chapala.
As the audience collected, they enjoyed both the scenery, the company
and the sangria,
but Ruth’s beautiful mellow voice rivaled the scenery and the sangria!
Friends you can make beautiful music with…
Becky sang a few songs,
There were a few faces from the past
as well as a lot of new faces in the crowd.
An intermission gave them a chance to all get acquainted, after which Ruth and Max held us all in thrall again.
and the party went on for a few more hours more
Mark sang a few more as well.
Ruth and Becky, who have sung together at times for 40 years did a few duets
Lach and Becky sang their rendition of my favorite ever Aussie song, “Wonthaggi,”
All-in-all, a magical afternoon and evening.

A beautiful setting, great music. After most of the people went home, Steve lit a fire and a number of music makers who had been in the audience took turns presenting music.  Lach picked me up at 1 because me car was in the repair shop.. I finally got home again about 9:30… Long, fun day. I made the sangria.. and read a few poems.

Wedding Ows

Our wedding plans are complicated by the groom’s lasciviousness
that I find incongruous to his vows of  exclusivi”us”ness.
That marriage vows will tame him I fear will prove misleading.
He’ll make his heart available  as long as it is beating
to any passing lady who looks in his direction,
a fact which as you see has not escaped his bride’s detection.
You might think I’m a martyr to forgive this faithless phony,
but I am looking forward to the future alimony!

Musical Intercession

If I delete the news from home and flip all my attention
to aspects of the world escaping major media’s mention—
consign my concentration to birdsong and the tide
that washes out world sorrows that I bear inside
and fills me with the opposite of what the news exports—
that awareness of perfection that is what nature reports—
my life becomes more peaceful as my mind is set at ease
by nature’s lullaby sung to the music of the bees.
