Religion and Politics

Religion and Politics

The ductile masses are easily led
either in affection or body or head,
to memorize lies emphatically told
and transformed from listless to dangerously bold.

Facts sprinkled with hatred may cause them to totter,
and thus are men led to riot and slaughter.
The rules of religion devoid of its heart
are often what rip the world’s humans apart.

Rigidity slams the door to detente,
replacing our “should” with what tyrants “want.”
What they call truth is merely illusion,
leading the masses to senseless delusion.

Look to the truth of the holy writ
and try to see who profits from it.
Is it the person making the rules
profiting by their control of fools?

Prompt words are memorize, listless, sprinkle, ductile, slam and emphatically.

Irresistible

Irresistible

Dishabille in a manner that other girls seek,
she was blonde and piquant and golden and Greek.
The men swarmed around her every night
named her “Pepperoncini” and all craved a bite.

No one could predict what she’d wear, say or do,
for each day she invented her image anew.
Her restoration might be crazy dresses
a new career or wild colored tresses.

But in spite of the changes—the weird fuss and fiddle,
she remained the fun girl who was caught in the middle.
No change could obscure her irresistible soul
at sixty years young, still every man’s goal.

Prompt words today are dishabille, predict, pepperoncini, restoration and middle.

Candid Camera

These photos were taken within a 30 minute period when I was in the pool very early Thursday morning. and started when all three dogs came up at the same time vying for my attention. Some of the photos definitely need to be enlarged to see them adequately. To enlarge photos, just click on them.

Writing a Poem with the Radio On

Writing a Poem with the Radio On

Makes me want to cry, all the cowboys with guitars
strumming in accompaniment to a world
whizzing through a universe it can barely comprehend.
The world is a wall that is crumbling, crumbling,
and no amount of musical mortar can keep up with it.

Lyrics on the radio swirl into a quagmire
of words to be written,
lists of what to do.
A new riff floats my mind away:
her backdoor screen is closed.
Turn around,
turn around my darling
or the world is lost.

Everything so crazy
it makes him want to cry

Drowning my sorrows in his,
the task of this poem remains unaccomplished.
The small dog cries over an untossed ball.
Yolanda with her mop, dispenses advice and laughs at my jokes.
That melody fading into silence,
I wait for a new one to begin.

Wild Nights

I’m caught up in my surreal dream,
irrational as it might seem,
of tabby cats and wolverines
in leather jackets and distressed jeans,
their animal natures left behind
for culture of a human kind.

Armadillos playing squash,
then coming over for a nosh.
Butterflies on roller skates
hobnobbing with potentates,
wings integral in lifting up
to table level as they sup.

Kangaroos keep up the beat
by drumming with their paws and feet.
Cicadas sound their castanets,

summoning their sobriquets*
as rain joins in with steady drumming,
to accompany their humming.

Varied species get along:
wolf and canary join in song,
the party only breaking up
when I’m awakened by my pup
and the pets of my imagination
succumb once more to sublimation.

*In Mexico, cicadas are nicknamed “Rainbirds” because their noisy clatter announces the imminent arrival of the rainy season.

Prompt words today are: culture, squash, surreal, integral, wolf, tabby cat and irrational. Photos of cat, butterfly, cicada and Zoe biting my ear are all by me. The rest are thanks to Unsplash.

Santiago’s Baptism

Santiago’s baptism turned out to be a six hour bash, including a one hour mass, the baptism, a family dinner at a local lakeside restaurant and boat rides on the lake. Here is pictorial proof of the fun.

Moonshadowed

Moonshadows

The rising moon between the hills gives nothing away,
but is a mute observer of the ending of the day.

Shadows moving through the grass eventually lie
quiet as the full moon ascends higher in the sky.

Then night birds weave a lullaby from their bill and croon
as broken clouds join shoulders to pass before the moon.

Space seems to reach its arms out and throw time away
as all of eternity comes to hold its sway.

We take a small vacation to join it in our dreams,
stitched into eternity within creation’s seams.

For the Sunday Swirl Wordle 572 the prompt words are: moon between throw time give nothing rising lull space broken mute shadow
