Earrings and Surprises: Flower of the Day, Sep 24, 2018

When Pasiano went to the vivero for more soil for my new pots, I asked him to choose two plants for the pots we’d put at the entrance to my house and to just surprise me. These are the plants he bought. Yolanda says the red and white one is an “aretes” plant, which means earrings–I guess because the red hangs down from the white.Through research, I’ve determined that the arete plant (actually, earrings of the queen) is a variety of fuchsia and the other plant is a hydrangea.  Mystery solved. They are the only white flowers in my garden.  A surprise that the Americano chooses all the bright colors and the Mexicano chose white, albeit with a little splash of blue or red in the center.

Don’t Pick the Daisies

Don’t Pick the Daisies

Please leave those daisies in their wrapper.
I find them just too pert and dapper.
I prefer a floral decoration
prone to promote excitation.
I’d choose something a little queer
to be used as a boutonniere.
Yes, I agree, daisies are cute
but aren’t held in good repute
for inclusion in bouquets exotic.
They aren’t sufficiently chaotic.
All their little petals are spread
in order. They are too well-bred.
I like my flowers with frisky sproutings,
curling ‘rounds and sticking-outings––
birds of paradise well hung
with orange feathers and bright blue tongue.
I admit, I am a binger
on passionflower and wild ginger,
on orchid and bromeliad.
Daisies I find a little sad––
too Doris Day and sixtyish.
A bit of odd is what I wish
for when I choose to pick a flower
for an arrangement or a bower.
Give me heliconia,
proteus or begonia.
For an occasion that is formal,
daisies, dear, are just too normal.

For my mother Pat who liked her food plain and her flowers exotic. XOXOXO

Subtropical Garden

Subtropical Garden

Since I live below the tropic of Cancer, the varieties of plants that not only survive but thrive in my garden are manifold.  Here are a few of the things that you would find in my garden if you came to visit, as well as the reasons why I love living here:

Banana Blossom Closeup: Flower of the Day, Apr 4, 2017

This flower that this is a small detail of was at least 2 feet long and hanging down from a great height on an even longer stalk. Just gorgeous. I’ll show the entire bloom tomorrow.

More Bougainvillea: Cee’s Flower of the Day Challenge, May 2, 2016

These are the bougainvilleas that are flourishing beneath the royal poinciana tree this year. I can see the ants carrying away the petals that have fallen on the cobblestones.  I’d like to believe they’ve been blown down, but there are probably trusty cutter ants up above, using their incisors to lop off the leaves and petals.  If I don’t do something to wage a war, the bushes and tree will be stripped in a week.  Hate to do it, but this really is war against the cutter ants.

Heliconia–Flower of the Day Feb. 8, 2016

Heliconia

This arrangement was done inside a coconut by a flower vendor who sets up in the street right across from the house I rent at the beach.  I bought one to take to the the hostess of a party but had to buy one for myself as well.  I added the tiny coconut “plug” to hide the watering hole.

Not Ready to Pop

Not Ready to Pop

IMG_4142 Version 4 Version 8I love the seed pods on these flowers almost as much as the flowers.  I earlier identified the flower as a heliconia, having found a picture of it with other heliconias, but I now think I am perhaps wrong.  I Googled it and was so excited to find a picture that looked exactly like my big pot filled with these flowers.  So, I was once again willing to be persuaded that it was an uncharacteristic version of a heliconia when I spotted the url for the flower.  It was my picture!  Ha.  If anyone knows what this is I’d love to find out.  It turns brown and pops open to emit very large shiny black round seeds.  At any rate, I love these black and whites of what I guess are mystery flower ovaries!!!

For more black and white beauties, look here: http://ceenphotography.com/2015/09/10/cees-black-white-photo-challenge-what-is-beautiful-to-you/

This is what the flower looks like, for identification purposes only.  Obviously not a black and white!
