Bumblebees (dVerse Poet’s Quadrille Challenge)

Bumblebees

Plant some flowers, and they will come,
and though they have a fuzzy bum,
curb your finger, curb your thumb.
Have another sip of rum.
Crack your knuckles, pop your gum.
Call your sweetie, call your mum.
Bake some brownies and have you some.

Sing a ditty, whistle, hum.
Play tuba ‘til your lips are numb.
Strum your cello, pound your drum.
Sand your chair legs ‘til they’re plumb.
Pat your kitten’s furry tum,
but as these bumblebees go and come,
to pet one would be really dumb!!!!!

For the dVerse Poets Pub Quadrille Challenge: bum. Two quadrilles on this one!!

Funny Man

He invented silly. It began with how he looked.
His eyes were slightly bulbous and his nose was long and hooked.
But he had such charm within him that it really didn’t matter.
Choosing between Brad Pitt and him? I would choose the latter!

For dverse poets quadrille prompt: silly and Here is where you can read more poems on the subject. A quadrille is a poem that contains exactly 44 words.

Grossed Out by Liver

Have you ever seen the quiver
of a plate of raw red liver?
Shake it and you’ll see it shiver.
Blood runs right out and forms a river.
If mom cooks it, I won’t forgive her.
I will not eat a gol darn sliver!!

For Whimsygismo’s dVerse Quadrille (exactly 44 words) prompt of Quiver. Phew!!!

Oblivious Seduction

You’d completely
won me over
by your second stanza,

even before you knew
I was the one
you were writing it for.

You had me
in the wink of an eye, even
before you knew

it was me

you were meant
to  wink at.

For dVerse Poets Quadrille prompt: Wink.

Excuse # 2

Excuse # 2

Quick, take my hand before I float off
on a breeze or a sigh or a sneeze or a cough.
No telling what currents are swelling today
to pick a girl up and float her away.
Oh, excuse number one?
Hand holding is fun!

A Veterinarian’s Decree

Gram for gram, ounce for ounce,
a kitten has the greatest bounce.
Every ruffle, every flounce
is an excuse to leap and pounce.
That’s why I’m driven to denounce
their misbehavior and announce,
no longer will I handle kittens
unless garbed in protective mittens!

For dVerse Poets, the quadrille prompt word is “bounce.”

Quartet

They flicker like tiny sparks,
these rapid kittens
intense in attention,
movements reflecting
every neighboring small movement.
Suspicious of brief distractions.
Violent, then soft like the feather
they’ve destroyed,
drifting to the window frame above,
forgotten by its intense stalkers
of a second before.

Jarred and Unjarred: DVersePoets Quadrille Prompt 14—Jars

DSC08581

Jarred and Unjarred

Seeing the world through crystal walls
curving around, protecting me.
Safely alone, I sit observing—
never jarred by what I see.
Infrequently, the lid screws open,
and sweet music streams into me.
Then I reach, sealing it tighter,
content to watch instead of be.

The prompt is to write a poem of exactly 44 words on the subject “Jar”

DVerse Poets: Spill

IMG_8653

This one word prompt was “Spill” and called for just 44 words to be used. If you are a word-counter, oh ye of little faith, you will find there are just 43 words in the body of the poem because, after reducing the first draft from 96 words, I didn’t realize until after I’d posted that the 44 wasn’t supposed to include the title.  Although I could easily and happily have reinstalled the last word painfully cut, I cannot because the poem is actually a photograph that took me forever to print out (because the printer isn’t cooperating) and photograph (because I needed to find a spot without a late afternoon glare) and adjust the poem to make all the words the same darkness because I never did find a spot without a glare.) So please just consider the title the first word of the poem.  It really is, anyway! (WordPress does not believe in letting us “shape” poems, thus the need to print up and photograph it.)
