Sunday Trees 354, Aug 26, 2018

I loved this big stump I found at the hacienda in Guanajuato. It has so many stories to tell, from the rocks that have been soaked up in its growth to the patches of grass it has sprouted to the prettily arranged string caught up in its cragginess. It is like a mountain for ants, with all sorts of adventures in store for them.

Still Life of Tree with Foot: Sunday Trees, Aug 5, 2018

My friend Gloria Palazzo tends to look down when she walks, either to collect prizes for potential future collages or just out of curiosity.  She was going to crop her image of this “found” tree that is actually a palm fruiting bundle much flattened by cars and feet but still a bit three-dimensional, but I say the foot makes the photo.

Persistent Sprout: Sunday Trees, July 29, 2018

When I had the tree-trimmers trim back my hugely overgrown pistachio tree, they cut off a huge branch and tarred it over completely to inhibit further growth.  This little sprout stubbornly flouted convention and somehow managed to push through the tar.  I have to applaud its persistence and determination!

Plumeria: Sunday Trees, July 8, 2018

My plumeria (frangipani) tree has stayed lush for so much longer than usual this year.  I think it has actually bloomed twice, probably due to the early rains.  Thought it deserved a post of its own, but the dogs photobombed at the last minute.

IMG_1530I love these strange markings on this palm tree in my back yard.  I believe they are caused by the tree trimmers parking their machetes in the tree while they go about their business clearing the severed off palm fronds that have fallen from above as they were up in the tree trimming it. This is not a guess.  I’ve seen them take a mighty swing, chopping the blade into the tree to hang there as they go about their business.

Perilous Trees! June 17, 2018

Mexico is so baaaad that even the trees are dangerous!!!! I love this sign. There wasn’t even a tree in sight! It was just a general warning about the dangers of trees, I guess. Men in Trees: Sunday Trees June 3, 2018

For a few weeks last month, it seems like I was always looking up to see a man in one of my trees.  They were like tamed teams of monkeys: trimming my palm trees, cutting back the huamuchile tree in my vacant lot, or men from the electric company trimming my giant royal poinciana from where it had grown around electrical wires.

Trees as Canvas, May 27, 2018

I think the Children from the nearby Lake Chapala Society Children’s Saturday Art Class have been spending some time in the shade of these trees lately. (Click on any tree to increase size of photos.)

These glorious trees are still blooming all over town. I want to stop and photograph every one I see, but usually resist.
