Bouquet: Flower of the Day, Jan 11, 2016

                                                                         Bouquet

What if you could wave your hand and pound your fingers on a magical machine to transform one simple flower into an entire bouquet of beautiful and varied flowers? And what if this cost you nothing?  This is what I gained from one lackluster and not even very well-focused photo of a bougainvillea bush in my yard.  By “mining” different locations on the photo and using only the simple tools available as part of my “photos” app that came with my MacBook Air, I created all of these different floral images. None will win any prizes, but this was just a fast playful interlude in an otherwise busy day.  Try it.  Fun, fun.

Help?

I have a poetry manuscript of 13 pages that includes 17 poems that I have to narrow down to 12 poems for a submission for an anthology by Monday.  Is there any kind soul willing to have a look and give their opinion?  I know of several people whose opinion I would especially appreciate, but don’t want to put them on the spot by asking.  If you are willing, please sent an email to me asap at jubob2@hotmail.com and I’ll email you the document.  Thanks so much.  I know…It is late.  I didn’t realize the deadline had been moved up.. It just involves making a list of three categories:  Yes, Maybe, Not So Much and putting each poem into one of those categories.  Fingers crossed.  Judy.

What Vestige Left?

                                                              What Vestige Left?

I think what any of my ancestors would find most surprising if they were to come back is that there is so little of them left.  My paternal grandma would look for her quilts, her embroidery and her China cabinet full of glass and porcelain and would find none of them in my house.  I spent too many years traveling, so my older sister Betty Jo and my cousin Betty Jane wound up with all of grandma’s things. The one good quilt is over Betty Jo’s bed in the managed care facility where she now lives, but she knows nothing of it or of us or of her own children, being the prisoner of Alzheimer’s that she is.

My cousin Betty Jane passed on years ago, so the China cabinet full of Grandma’s dishes is in Idaho in the house of  her second husband. What Grandma would find of herself in my house is:

one blue bowl filled with jade plant cuttings by my kitchen sink,

an old pottery canning jar above my kitchen cabinets––

and remnants of her tatting, a small square cut from a pillowslip she embroidered and part of a quilt square that I used in a retablo entitled “Our Lady of Notions.” (The view above is looking down on the top of the retablo–details not shown because of the shooting angle in the view of the entire retablo below.)

judy 2Amazing that so little remains of her in my house when she had a house stuffed full of things.  Now that I am the one with the house stuffed full, I wonder what of me will remain after fifty years.  Perhaps just this blog or my books or my artwork.  Maybe that is why I am so compulsive about writing and doing art–that need to be remembered.

The Prompt: Modern Families––If one of your late ancestors were to come back from the dead and join you for dinner, what things about your family would this person find the most shocking?

Succulents in Full Bloom

You saw these earlier before the buds burst open.  Beautiful then, beautiful now.

Lulu and Annie

Lulu and Annie

Version 2

I dreamed last night that I woke up and my cat was on my chest.  I was surprised because she won’t come any farther than the wall to be fed since Morrie, my third dog, came to stay.  My first cat, Lulu, moved out and in with the neighbors when I got my second dog.  At any rate, I petted my cat, so glad to see her but wondering how she got into the house.  Then suddenly another cat  jumped up on the bed .  I saw that it was Annie, my youngest cat.  So who was the other one??? I opened my eyes to see it was Lulu who had come back to visit.  I was so happy to have them both together again and we lay there (in the dream) for a long time.  When I woke up I was still pleased that I’d seen Lulu after all these years, then realized it was a dream.

Both of the girls displayed an interest in my work, although Annie had a bit more of a technological bent.

daily life color113 (1)One day, I caught Lulu giving Annie climbing lessons.  Here she is between the glass and the screen, so there was little danger of falling, but some danger of not being able to extricate herself.

daily life color112For advanced lessons in climbing, they moved to the pistachio tree. Yes.  You can believe your eyes. Lulu does have one green eye and one blue one.

Last night when I was out to dinner I ran into Lulu’s “new” parents who told me she’d been very ill and asked me how old she was.  They were surprised to discover that she’ll be 15 years old in a few months.  They thought she was much younger.  But, alas, they told me she has been very very ill and has not been eating which never happens with her. I am afraid to call to see if she passed in the night and came to visit me one last time.

Worst Case Scenario

The Prompt: What is the worst and best thing that could happen to you today?

The very worst would be to have a stroke or contract Alzheimer’s.  The very best would be to have an agent or publisher call to say they want to publish my next 4 children’s books.  Short and sweet answer.  Not typical of me.  Ha.

Color Your World: Beaver

Color Your World: Beaver             1024x768-beaver-solid-color-background.jpg

Back in the late fifties, my folks  built a new house a block away from our old one.  A modern ranch style, it was built on a small hill so the foundation of our house was level with the roof line of the house behind us.  My dad built a wooden walkway and porch that gave us access to our kitchen and basement entry from the garage on the other side of the house.  Underneath this walkway, which was up on very high supports, was a dirt  incline that was almost irresistible to the neighborhood kids–especially when it rained.  One day, as I stood at the kitchen sink doing dishes, I turned off the water but could still hear water running.  I went out on the back porch, looked down and saw this sight.  It was our little neighbor from across the street, Kenny Palmer, who had discovered the garden hose, turned it on, and created a wonderful mud party for himself.  Good photo opportunity. Would that I had had my present camera.  I would have taken twenty shots to this one and perhaps have achieved one a bit less fuzzy.IMG_0006

Time was when I would have cropped this picture, but given permission by Cee’s “rule of 2/3,” I have left the wall above––mainly because I’m intrigued by the quality of light and shadow there. I love the contrast to the very busy  crown of thorns and succulent in the foreground.  I always know what I like but don’t always know why.  Thanks, Cee, for giving a name to this one!!
