Trespass

I woke up with the word “Cublic” rampaging through my brain. When I got up to pee, “Cublic!” formed my entire  interior monologue. Back to bed.  Someone knocked on the door.  “Cublic!” I let in Ellie to wash the sheets for the upstairs apartment. Tried to go back to sleep, but “Cublic” kept nudging my dream, so I got up, fed Morrie, let him out and pulled a chair up to the computer. After a few changes of spelling (initially I had spelled it “Cublik”) I found that it was a Korean company that had found a way to put advertising videos on the pagers restaurants use to call you to your table.  Good grief!!!  So, when I went to find my daily prompt word on the WordPress Daily Post and saw that the word was “territory,” I knew I had to claim mine by getting rid of “Cublic.”  Here goes.

Trespass

They are always out there waiting, intent on doing peeking,
inflicting what they want to sell over what I’m seeking.
They invade my territory every single minute,
eavesdropping on each search I make to try to find what’s in it.
I wouldn’t really mind at all if they stole my cookies,
if only they confined their sorties just to having lookies,
but I fear that’s not enough. The real end of their story
is that they are planning raids on my territory.
I do not want their bracelets nor their brassieres nor their dresses.
When they think they know what I want, their thoughts are merely guesses.
What I really want the most is every bit of screen space,
but every day more of my screen seems to be has-been space.
Every minute, a new sales pitch comes feeding at my trough,
while I only want an app. that tells the pop-ups to pop off!!!!!

The prompt today was territory.

Filled out Time

Filled out Time

I need an elixir, concoction or a potion
that I can have a swig of to relieve me of the notion
that the pleasure of each moment is something to be earned
and that doing nothing is a pastime to be spurned.

I’m no good at doing nothing. Filling time up is sublime.
That’s why people take up knitting or subscribe to Amazon Prime.
When you do these pastimes, you can do two things at one time.
Have some productivity along with just a fun time.

For those athletically deprived who are actiion-phobic,
just watch a movie as you do exercise aerobic.
When dull friends visit, grab your needles. Have a little knit.
Boring conversation is more fun with yarns in it.

If time is of the essence and you find you’re in a bind,
File your nails in the movies. Your seat mates will not mind
a little sawing action or, even if they do,
chances are your neighbors will be more polite than you.

Read novels while you’re eating if you’re literarily-prone.
A problem when you’ve dinner guests? No problem when alone.
Learn Spanish as you drive around. You’ll never be a dunce
once you learn the secret to doing two things at once!

The point is that all of us driven to fill up days
do not do it out of guilt or because it pays.
Some of us just spend our day with what we love to do,
and we have so many interests that they have to form a queue.

And though I’m not given to hammocks unless I can read a book in them,
I must admit I’ve noticed how good other people look in them.
The  real secret to filling time is if you do eschew it?
It is the gospel truth— there’s no law that you must do it.

The prompt word today is Elixir.

Gardener, Know Thy Garden. Gatherer, Know Thy Garnishings.

Gardener, Know Thy Garden. Gatherer, Know Thy Garnishings

That bloom upon your table, trees in your “empty” lot

might feature in a bloody murder mystery’s plot.
Its fruit looks so inviting. Its seeds you gather with care,
just as an adornment, but there’s more than beauty there.

One drop can bring your ending. One fruit can cause great pain.

One time unknowingly eaten, you’ll never taste again.
Be careful what you gather and use care in your adorning.
What’s beautiful and delicious can kill without a warning!

(I’m adding this to Cee’s daily flower posting as I think it is important for us all to know that what is pleasing to the eye and palate is not always as innocent as it appears to be.)

Below  are all photos of deadly plants and seeds that I’ve taken that are in my own garden, my jewelry box, or the gardens of friends.  Who knew? I could go on with photos of lantana, lilies, oleander, but I’ve just been informed my startup disk is full again, so I’ll leave it to you to get to know your own garden. I’ve gotten rid of all the lantana because for some reason my dogs love eating it.  Also my lilies, as some varieties can kill a cat who brushes up against them and then licks its coat.

My “empty” lot next door is filled with these deadly tree-sized castor bean plants.  jdbphoto

I’ve seen young girls in Bali drilling these seeds to string as jewelry.  One slip of the drill could bring about their end.  These earrings were purchased in Mexico.  I’ve purchased others in Peru.  Widely used for ornamentation, they are deadly poison. jdbphoto

Behinds

The challenge was to take photos of the backs of things. Some of these are way too small in this collage.  Click on the first photo to enlarge them all and see captions.

African Tulip Tree: Flower of the Day, Mar 28, 2017

It’s a toss-up whether the African Tulip Tree or Royal Poinciana is the most beautiful tree on earth, imho.

Another Sunset

Another Sunset

This bald
 horizon line,
teeth of far-off cliffs.

An orange that  hurts, it is so bright—
the face of the sunset
makes its daily pilgrimage.

Only yesterday breathing in a sea.
Today, facing the hard stone
of an offshore outcropping.

We, the tender-hearted,
wait for you each evening.
We line our hearts up for you.

Over here, I’m the girl
In red sequins at the front,
waiting for your black velvet brother.

WOW #8.  The purpose of this prompt is to white out words in a given passage or poem to create your own piece. I added a few words as well to make the poem mine. Here is the original:

February Elegy by Mary Jo Bang
© Mary Jo Bang

This bald year, frozen now in February.
This cold day winging over the ugly
Imperfect horizon line,
So often a teeth line of ten buildings.
A red flag flapping
In the wind. An orange curtain is noon.
It all hurts her eyes. This curtain is so bright.
Here is what is noticeably true: sight.
The face that looks back from the side
Of the butter knife.
A torn-bread awkwardness.
The mind makes its daily pilgrimage
Through riff-raff moments. Then,
Back into the caprice case to dream
In a circle, a pony goes round.
The circle’s association: There’s a center
To almost everything but never
Any certainty. Nothing is
More malleable than a moment. We were
Only yesterday breathing in a sea.
Some summer sun
Asked us over and over we went. The sand was hot.
We were only yesterday tender hearted
Waiting. To be something.
A spring. And then someone says, Sit down,
We have a heart for you to forget. A mind to suffer
With. So, experience. So, the circus tent.
You, over there, you be the girl
In red sequins on the front of a card selling love.
You, over there, you, in black satin.
You be the Maiden’s Mister Death.

Purple Passion

Purple Passion

My days of purple passion regrettably are over—
all those desktop gropings and rollings in the clover.
His need to perform publicly an act that should have been
romantically private? I was reluctant to back then.
But now that passion seems to be on permanent vacation.
We old gals get excitement by our over-lunch relation
of bygone tales of passion, in fact it is a blast
trading juicy tidbits as we share a light repast.
It seems that we get pleasure in sharing just a few
public recitations of what we were loath to do.

The All and Everything Truck: Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge: Mar 26, 2017

This truck drives through town at least once a week selling household cleaning products.  I love it. There are some totally unexpected things piled on, as will become clear as we zoom in on it:

For Cee’s Odd Ball Challenge.
