Carrion Flower: Flower of the Day, Jan 10, 2018

STAPELIA GIGANTEA–one of a few flowers that smells like rotting meat and so attracts mainly flies.  The purpose, however, is not for the flower to feed on the flies, but rather for the flies to pollinate the flowers.

(I loved the similarity of the starfish photo I used in my last post and the shape of the Carrion Flower, so had to put them together in this post.)

Shy Annes: Flower of the Day, Jan 6, 2018

If I were to name these flowers, I’d name them Shy Annes.  In reality, they are thunbergias.  Sweet little ladies. (Enlarge by clicking on any photo.)

Kalanchoe: Flower of the Day, Jan 5, 2018

I think the mystery is solved concerning how one plant could have such a variety of blooms on it. See clues below.

(Click on first photo to enlarge all.)

After a few days, it became clear that there were actually three different colors of kalanchoe planted in each pot! Tres por uno. So much for the variety of buds and blooms on one plant.

Kalanchoe Study #2: Budding out. Flower of the Day, Jan 3, 2018

IMG_5637This is #2 in a series of shots taken of one kalanchoe plant–all on the same day.  It seemed to have at least 4 phases of budding to full flower all occurring at the same time.  Go HERE to see the first shot of the portion of the plant in full bloom.  Hard to believe these are all stages of the exact same flower.
