The Good Wife: Page 62, Line 6

The Haunted Wordsmith’s prompt is to pick up the nearest book and turn to page 62, line 6 and use that line in a story.  The book I picked up was Veils, Halos and Shackles and this is the line: “. . . .each night passing through a boundary.”

The Good Wife

Each night passing through a boundary, every morning coming home.
Pinned to the day’s agenda with no free time for her to roam
the streets of her imagination, gathering images she’d share
in all the stories she would write if she had the time and nerve to dare.
What would they think if they knew where she journeyed during dreaming time?
Would the other wives revile her or tell their husband of her crime?

The lush banks of imagination where she went barefoot and unveiled
and did the things that in the real world would cause her to be shunned or jailed
were her reward for time in harness, being that person they expected.
Veiled and cloistered and obedient. Qualities they all respected.
But in her dreams she lived the wild world—unfettered, uncensored and free.
It was the only place in her life that she labeled herself “me.”

In that world that wasn’t her world—that place where she was forced to be—
She existed as observer, watching a self she labeled “she.”
She kept her true self safely hidden. Kept her opinions to herself.
All her precious thoughts and talents neatly stacked upon the shelf
waiting for her nightly visits when she could take them down and play
until the early morning sunlight drew her, regrettably, to day.

Colorful Living

I couldn’t find a photo of one of my favorite houses when I did my first post, so I have to publish an addendum to my “Places People Live.” This is the house of my friend Candace, who loves color, as I do, and her husband Bob.  I’ve now added it to the collage, but for those of you who have already seen my earlier post, here is another wonderful place where wonderful people live, and HERE is the original post of all of the houses.

Acquisitions

It’s all part and parcel of what I’ve been repressing—
one of those hidden vices I should have been addressing.
All those dingy corners filled with useless things.
Wondering how much happiness each hoarded object brings.
How can I glide through life carrying such a pack?
It must impede my progress with all that on my back.

There must be a reason a turtle has a shell
that enables all he glides through to slide off him as well.
He doesn’t amass fortune or any worldly thing.
Each day he starts anew to see what it might bring.
Perhaps in my next life I’ll be less of a hoarder.
and in the life I’m finishing I’ll be a better sorter.

One pile for donations, another I will sell.
Another, objects for old friends I know will love them well.
One pile for Yolanda and one for Pasiano.
Old pictures for my sister to put on her piano.
Rings for all my nieces and earrings for my friends.
When it comes to shoes, the pile never ends.

When it is all sorted, the clothes all hung on racks,
knickknacks on the tables and records piled in stacks,
I’ll open up garage doors and let the masses in
to sort through all the boxes and plow through every bin.
And when the weekend’s over—the chaos and the din,
I’ll start amassing more and start the process all again!

Standing in the Gap

This beautiful act by an interfaith group in Ogden, Utah, brought about such a wonderful healing experience. This is much needed in these times of so much furor and disagreement. Please read what one group did to circumvent fear and hatred.

calensariel's avatarImpromptu Promptlings

This past week brought so many instances of hatred and violence across our nation, from the many pipe bombs that were delivered to Donald Trump’s critics, to the eleven Jewish folks killed in the synagogue in Pennsylvania. Pipe bombs are still being intercepted, and people who have spoken out against Trump are anxious and fearful. And throughout the states Jewish communities were nervous about holding Shabbat services Friday night, wondering if their synagogue would be next?

In light of that, the Interfaith community of Ogden*** joined together to surround Congregation Brith Sholem’s synagogue during their worship so they could enjoy their service without fear. There were probably 40+ of us there.

But the interesting thing was — which often happens when you’re trying to be a blessing to someone — they didn’t want us standing outside the building. No… They wanted us to come inside and worship with them. So…

Emma’s Shadow

Screen Shot 2018-11-06 at 12.48.05 AM

Matt asks, “If you could experience any movie again for the first time, what would it be?” I think it would be “Emma’s Shadow,” a Danish film made in 1988 about a young girl neglected by her wealthy parents who engineers her own kidnapping and is adopted by an impoverished sewer worker.  It is absolutely charming and it has been so long since I’ve seen it that it probably would feel like the first time I ever saw it.  I actually found it online and bought it years ago. I need to look it up when I get home.  I still have a t.v. with a built in V.H.S. player.

Sacrifice, for VJ’s Weekly Challenge

Sacrifice

IMG_6707

Some people give their lives to it,
And others never do––
Conditions never calling for
Rash actions to ensue.
I’ve held onto my life because
Fate never asked me to
Immolate myself to save
Child, soldier, Jew,
Ensuring that I remain here
Securely in life’s queue.

I don’t think sacrifice has been anything I’ve had to do much of in my life, short of occasionally knowingly giving someone the last pork chop or the biggest piece of cake.  Perhaps this is because I had no children.

I can think of only one big potential sacrifice I made in my life and that is something I will not speak of, mainly because people it might affect are still alive. So, in lieu of writing a personal essay or poem on this topic, I invite you to read an article about the top ten most inspiring self sacrifices.  You can go  HERE to read it.

VJ’s Prompt: Sacrifice

Oblivious Seduction

Oblivious Seduction

You’d completely
won me over
by your second stanza,

even before you knew
I was the one
you were writing it for.

You had me
in the wink of an eye, even
before you knew

it was me

you were meant
to  wink at.

The Fruits of Nature

20181103_201207

The Fruits of Nature

Wind chimes in the autumn by stripping bare the trees.
A vine of clouds now choke the moon. Stars fill the sky like bees.
Summer is clearly over and arctic winds are coming.
Small squirrels mine the oak tree with their insistent drumming.
Our backyard orchard gives its last small shelter to the birds
although its leafy plumage is diminished now by thirds.
Where months before small families chirped their hunger to the skies,
empty nests have been laid bare to marauding eyes.
No danger now, unless the murderous blue jay stores away
the memory of their placements for a future day.
The trees stand strong and sturdy, their roots below entwined,
watching one more old year steadily unwind.
What new pleasure in this scene will we newly find
once all the fruits of  nature are pared down to the rind?

The word prompts today are: chime, over, arctic, oak tree, orchard  and this sketch by Kira. Here are the links:
