Name Three Things

A Guy Called Bloke has asked us to read these questions and name three things:

You can dunk in tea or coffee? In Coffee: chocolate chip cookies, Oreos, a Fudgsicle.

You can enjoy at a carnival? Haunted house, Fortune teller, Snow cones.

You can’t enjoy when it’s windy? A new hairdo, riding a motorcycle, reading a newspaper in the park.

Your body can’t do? A backbend (I discovered to my distress in my mid-30’s,) look up without getting dizzy, walk uphill for long.

You don’t learn at school? Kindness, acceptance of other cultures, the importance of intuition.

You can put onto a pizza? Green olives, pepperoni, green peppers.

You can eat with? Fingers, chopsticks (in a pinch-ha), a credit card.

You don’t suggest you do at home blindfolded? Write your blog, put on makeup, change your printer cartridges.

That are important to you? My writing, my art, my loved ones: family, friends, cats and dogs.

That you love to do at the beach? Walk, collect found natural objects, write.

That you do in the morning? Write my blog, drink a smoothie, check e-mail and facebook.

That you do every time you log in to your blog? Write to my four word prompts, post a photo of a flower to Cee’s site, Check my stats and comments.

I must admit that I like the jungle look. These plants by my guest room patio seem to have picked up my vibes.

The Vocabulary Lesson

IMG_3811

The seven-word prompt was to make use of as many of these words as possible in a short piece: knickers, oneiric, cigar, shenanigans, cold-cocked, finish and sun-dried. You needn’t check.  I used all of them. The November writing prompt was “Lipstick Lover.”

The Vocabulary Lesson

She was more than irritated. Pissed, really, as she thumbed through the dictionary in search of the word “oneiric.” Any word that needed to be looked up didn’t belong in a “Dear Jane” letter anyway—as though to the very end he was trying to demonstrate his superiority—her inferiority.

BASTARD! She slammed the dictionary to the floor, picked up the half-smoked cigar he’d left in the ashtray last night, relit it and surveyed the new paper cut on her index finger. Just one more of his shenanigans, she thought. Right after he’d cold-cocked her with the news that he and she were finished—that he was leaving her FOR HER MOTHER!!!!!!, he’d lit up his Cubano for one more puff before grinding it out and handing her this letter, telling her not to open it until he’d gone.

His finish had been pretty much like their beginning—with him ending up on the floor. But this time she was standing over him rather than lying on top of him. Idly, she flicked an ash into his open mouth, hitting him squarely on his tongue. The sun-dried blood on his lip looked like the smudge of a lover’s lipstick. Around his head were the remains of the crystal candlestick her mother had given them for their wedding.  She sucked at the paper cut, then at the gash across her palm that she had gotten from a shard of the candlestick that had taken a far smaller part out of her than it had out of him.

Far away in the kitchen, the phone rang and rang. Probably her mother. Well, let her get her knickers in a bunch waiting for him. Let her think (for as long as she could put off coming to investigate) that her daughter had reclaimed her property. She was in possession for now and everyone knew possession was 9/10ths of the law. She took another long draw before examining her wounds again.

Then, her curiosity getting the better of her, she moved back to the dictionary to thumb through the o’s. When she’d found the word, she chuckled and looked back at her lost love. Gone from this world, but no one would ever know it if she just shut his jaw and wiped off the bloodstain. As a matter of fact, he’d look downright oneiric!

The Nov. 8 Nov. Writing Prompt is Lipstick Lover.

Abandoned

Abandoned

Grass sways by the abandoned house
I cower inside––a trembling mouse
exposed to the bright flash of day
when all else has gone away.

First my father, then my mum
go away and never come
again to shelter, feed or love.
Life is a winging mourning dove

that makes us and then flies away,
making green grass into hay,
the flush of life and then decay,
a harsh light turning shadows gray.

Life swells  like paint–a curling blister.
It peels away my older sister,
then also takes my younger brother
and never comes to bring another.

A shadow passes over me.
A sparrowhawk. I dare not flee,
for life is mainly perilous.
It makes us just to feed on us.

Outside I see the preening cat.
It waits for me––patient and fat
in tall grass by the abandoned house
wherein I hide–a trembling mouse.

Daily Inkling’s Prompt: You’re walking in the woods, and there is an old shack in the middle of nowhere. You open the front door to find a completely different realm entirely unlike our own. Describe this new domain. (This is a reblog of a poem written two years ago.)

Ollie

I found this adorable photo of Ollie before he became the fat cat he is today.  Had to post it:

A Surefire Recipe for Banishing Dejection

A Surefire Recipe for Banishing Dejection

If you’re feeling down and out about this last election,
here’s a recipe that might banish your dejection.
Or, if instead your problem is way too much to do,
this selfsame concoction might just work for you.

You need to take a holiday away from all your hurrying.
Life was not created for perpetual worrying.
Take all the world’s problems and put them on a shelf.
Take a little time off  purely for yourself.

Find a ripe banana, a papaya and some ice.
Blueberries, soy milk, fiber and some apple juice are nice.
Don’t worry if the papaya has a big brown spot.
You can cut it out because, poisonous? It’s not.

Put it in a blender. Push the button with your finger.
It’s not automatic, so you will have to linger
while the magic little blades make your concoction thinner.
Take a meditation break as you watch its spinner.

After just a minute, retire with your drink.
Take it to an easy chair to have a little think.
Chances are your problem is that you do not sin enough,
so, pour a little gin in if you find it isn’t thin enough.

The Ragtag prompt today is Holiday.

My friend & fellow Tennessean Tony Burgess reblogged Angie Harmon’s excellent post today.  Tony lives in East Tennessee, which has long been a reliably Republican outpost, so it gave me hope to read this post, so much hope that I feel compelled to pass along the good word.  Please visit Tony’s awesome blog to see what else he has to say.
