Morrie Gets Sand between His Toes

Morrie seemed to have no problems getting accustomed to the beach.  He’s even a bit less disturbed now when mom puts him on his long lead on the porch and beach or in his cage at home and leaves to have a life away from him.  Why he can’t go with is a story we’ll leave for another time. Cruising the Volcano

Cruising the Volcano

I have been so busy getting ready for my three-month move to the beach that I didn’t even consider that I’d be driving past Colima—one of the most active volcanoes in North America. I had read about the recent lava flow down the south side, the ash warnings with evacuation suggested in certain areas, and unusual activity in the months leading up to now, but my concentration today was mainly on Morrie, my surprise companion on this trip to La Manzanilla.

Long story short, my house sitter had to cancel on short notice. No house sitter—no one to live with Morrie and Diego. The result was that a friend took Diego while I brought Morrie to the beach with me. Other than his time in the animal hospital when he broke his leg two years ago and a handful of times someone let him slip out of the gate and he took off like a bat out of hell, this is only his second time away from his own yard as well as his first time away from Diego.

Today’s six-hour journey in the car must have been like a trip to a foreign planet to him. For hours, he seemed to be searching the surrounding world as we passed it by. I looked over at one point and Colima Volcano was sending up a huge balloon cloud behind him. It was a gorgeous shot. Unfortunately, there was no place to pull off and a big truck coming up fast behind. By the time I got to a pull-off spot, this is the view that presented itself:

img_1917 img_1916I barely noticed the volcano in the background as the towers dominated, and it had ceased venting.

Now, here is Morrie interspersed with the scenery we were passing. Luckily, Colima vented again a few times, but not nearly at the magnitude it had that first time I viewed it.

This late afternoon and evening, Morrie had his first introduction to the beach.  It is a tale in itself, but I need sleep right now more than you need a longer story; so, perhaps tomorrow I will tell it along with at least one other that had a surreal quality to it.

Personally, I prefer last year’s model.  This year’s looks too grown up.  But it will be good for the beach.  He looks like a square-jawed rabbit, doesn’t he?

Today’s prompt word was year.

At least one of us figured out which way to go a half hour ago and stayed there.  The other two believe in milling about.

Newest Bloom: Flower of the Day, Oct. 8, 2016

img_7186

Can anyone identify this newest bloom in my flowerpot?  It has taken this perch for its own, for some reason, although it doesn’t look like it can be too comfortable. He is usually lying down in it, tennis ball in his jaws. The rest of the act is to drop his tennis ball into the pool from it and then dive in after it, swim to the side and haul himself out, then repeat.  And repeat. And repeat.  He did this 11 times in one hour the other day when I was in the pool exercising… then another 5 times when I was inside at my computer.  He noses the ball closer and closer and lets it roll back a bit each time, then suddenly rolls it enough to tip the balance and it goes into the pool. Then if I don’t retrieve and throw it for him, he jumps in and retrieves it himself. This is what you do when your mom won’t throw more than 30 pitches for you in a row. https://ceenphotography.com/2016/10/07/flower-of-the-day-october-8-2016-dahlia/

Morrie Makes Out

What happens when you tear up your old bed–and your brother’s???

Your mom buys you a new one! Spell that  S P O I L E D !!!!!!!

Backstory: Want to see what I did to my brother’s old bed?  Look HERE.

And then, when my mom gave my brother my bed because I totally destroyed his, what did I do the next night?  Look below:

IMG_2674I totally destroyed “my” bed (now his.) What does she expect when she buys a tough old Scottie and his bro  pink beds???? She had to be trained!  Notice the proper color of the new bed in the first photo above!!!  Scotties rule.

Camp Estrella 2016, Day 5

I was too busy this morning trying to get whiskers and rubber backstraps installed on all the masks to take many photos.  Since it was raining and since I arrived first, I got soaked while pushing my umbrella handle up to remove gallons of water from the dangerously sagging roof of the canopy. Then I had 30 slightly soggy masks (from the humidity of the rain) to deal with in addition to the last rehearsal of camp songs before the dress rehearsal for parents tonight.  Everyone else was equally busy running through dances and songs as well as finishing up on the necklaces and bracelets and gift boxes they made yesterday.

The kids were rowdy from the rain and one little boy who just couldn’t stop raising trouble finally got sent home when he used a very adult word. (After countless warnings.)  Lunch––hamburgers and French fries–– was a great success.

Finally, at two, the kids were gone, we cleaned up the tables, with help I packed up 5 huge boxes and countess bags with art materials and I divided the “spoils” for two pinatas tomorrow–one for bigger kids and one for smaller kids. Then home to rest up for three hours before going back again for the dress rehearsal.  And, wouldn’t you know it.  One of my front crowns fell out!! If you can imagine me with pearly whites surrounding one black little upside down cone shaped filed tooth in the middle front of my smile–well, you’ll could see how well my day is coming along.

Trying to stick it back with dental adhesive, I chipped the back of the crown, which means a nice $450 bill.  Only money, no one died, it might still stick and save me the embarrassment of looking like my hillbilly background..All’s, well, okay with the world if not exactly right.

Parents and family were invited to the dress rehearsal. The kids singing  “La Llorena” along with Agustin nearly brought the house down!  The girls were beautiful, the boys only slightly less rowdy than usual.  Somehow, we got through the almost impossible task of herding 30 excited primadonnas through their acts.  The girls bellydancing class that was an outgrowth of last year’s camp performed wonderfully and to loud applause.

(Click on first photo and then arrows to enlarge all photos.)

Then we served cookies and punch, everyone left, and because I wasn’t ready to go home, I wandered into Viva Mexico, the restaurant our camp site is the garden part of.  Jere and DePaul and Rita were there, so I joined them.  My tooth fell out again, so I ate soup, and after most of the other customers, save for four tables, had departed, Agustin serenaded us all.  So sweet, and a woman tourist at an adjacent table was heard to remark, “I could live in this town. Imagine just living here and walking down that street to this restaurant.”  We all agree, and that’s why we do.

Of course all ideallic times eventually end, and this is what I returned to.  The last existing dog bed in the house, Morrie’s own, shredded beyond retrieval.  Good Night!

Anniversary

Well, it has been exactly one year to the day since I returned home to this scene and very shortly thereafter, this scene.

So, how appropriate that I should return home today to this scene? To hear the story via captions and see larger views, click on first pic and right side of remaining pics.

So, do you think it is fair to give Diego Morrie’s bed? I am absolutely sure Diego did not rip up his own bed as he hasn’t chewed up anything for years and Morrie chews up everything he comes in contact with.  Not a bed, however, at least not lately.  I’ve been doing what I did last year––leaving early in the morning for camp, getting home exhausted and feeding the dogs and going to bed to rest so no, I haven’t thrown his toy much for him and perhaps he is bored, but he has a whole big yard to play in and a brother to play with him.  Is it cruel to punish him by making him sleep without a bed for a few nights?  What do you think, Aunt Marilyn?

Morrie’s New Look

Morrie still has his usual beard and facial hair because the groomer had to use a muzzle as he kept trying to bite him, but I don’t mind the hirsute look.  I told him I didn’t want the classic Scottie haircut of short on top and long on the bottom.  I think he looks pretty cute.  Diego and Frida are busy sniffing him because they know something is different, and Diego was beside himself when we left without him this morning.  Now we’re home and ready to dig into our old life again. Internet is restored, at least for the time being..

Morrie Gets a Pedicure, and Other Burnt Orange Delights.

IMG_1279IMG_1284 Version 3IMG_9553Yes, I was surprised that Morrie took so well to being pampered with an on-site bath, blow-dry, grooming and pedicure.  (This enterprising young man has started a business where he comes to your house to groom and wash your dog. He seems to be popular as he was booked solid for a week.  Fortunately, he had an appointment with a dog a block away from me so although I’m 5 km. out of town, he just worked me in after his other appointment.) Morrie was a bit rank.  Hated to leave him with the house sitter in that condition. And yes, I was proud of the boy.  And yes, he immediately went down and rolled in the dirt and the grass.  A fella’s gotta have some pride, much as he seemed to enjoy the attention.
