The Advantages of Social Distancing

My salad is mouthwatering, the ambience is fine.
The numbers in my dining room below what laws define.
I am amply distanced as I am all alone,
the friend that I am dining with connecting via phone.

The cake I baked four days ago obliterated in three,
insures my tonight’s dinner will be dessert-free.
How do I compensate for that when dining all alone?
I have my entertaining quirks for which I won’t atone.

My friend is in her very best—her Klein and De la Renta.
While I slurp up my soup, she slowly savors her polenta.
To not dress in my best as well I feel she would find rude,
so I will not reveal from the waist down, I’m dining nude!

Prompt words are mouthwatering, ambience, cake, obliterate and number.

When Your Door Falls Off During the Rainy Season!!

What do you do when you open the back door and the whole heavy glass door falls in as you pull on the knob? First you call Pasiano who works for an hour and can’t get it reinstalled. So he props it against the outside storage cupboard–possibly the worst place to put it if you in fact require access to anything stored in the closet , but at least it is sort of protected from the inevitable rain. Then you call every aluminum place in three towns and either they don’t answer or they are crazy busy. Can anyone come today? No. Tomorrow? Probably not. Will they call you when they can come? Yes.

At a Distance

At a Distance

In these months of social distance, it seems lazy does not matter.
We grow our hair and fingernails and stir the cookie batter.
The main excitement in our lives is whether gravy’s thickening
and when our waistlines do the same, the truth of it is sickening.

Out in the world there’s conflict when factions take to task
the all-consuming question: to mask or not to mask?
Confined to home, we find conflict in books or television
or when we try to teach the kids the facts of long division.

Our galas are all in the past as are the school fetes
as social life is narrowed down to children and to mates.
Whether our lives have changed for good is open to debate.
The only way to know for sure is just to sit and wait.

Prompt words for today are lazy, matter, sickening, gala and conflict.

First Dandelion: FOTD July 17, 2020

For Cee’s FOTD

I don’t see many dandelions in Mexico, but this one presented itself right beside my studio door. So easy to overlook, but so pretty close up. It obviously isn’t the first one to bloom, as is evidenced by the dandelion seed fuzz caught up behind it, but it is the first one I’ve noticed this year.

A Fine Fit

A Fine Fit

I’m enamored of the morning. I am giddy with myself.
The rain is nearly over and the bowls up on the shelf
cry out to me for oatmeal. Steam is dancing in the pot,
and I am so content with the blessings that I’ve got.
I need no fine adornment and diamonds have I none.
I have dogs and cats and nature, and when the day is done,
swinging in the hammock with a small dog for my covering,
cats mewing from the roof and the big dog closely hovering,
the world seems good enough. In fact, it feels just fine.
Nobody else’s life would fit me half as well as mine!

Prompt words for today are dancing, nearly, giddy, adorn and self.

Rainy Season Morning

Rainy Season Morning

The gray cat pressed against my knee,
saved from the rain
that patters
on the tile overhang
outside the bedroom window.

Thunder
like the great world’s indigestion,
muffled chirp of birds
under palm leaf shelters.

This morning is gentled
by the steady rain.
The massive palm frond,
made lazy by the weight of rain
that colonizes its narrow avenues,
sways sways in the gentle wind.

Dark skies,
as though the day cannot find us.
8:44 a.m. Thursday.
I pull the quilt over us
and birds fly as the frond
sways violent in a stiffer wind.

Struth

Struth

The world is swathed in horror. It vacillates between
ridiculous pronouncements both uninformed and mean.
Truth seems to be moveable. We store it here and there,
but rarely in an orange creature with unruly hair.
It seems he has no access to lexicon or brain
as everything he says is impossibly inane.

Prompt words today are horror, vacillate, moveable, ridiculous and access. Photo on Unsplash, used with permission.
