About lifelessons

My blog, which started out to be about overcoming grief, quickly grew into a blog about celebrating life. I post daily: poems, photographs, essays or stories. I've lived in countries all around the globe but have finally come to rest in Mexico, where I've lived since 2001. My books may be found on Amazon in Kindle and print format, my art in local Ajijic galleries. Hope to see you at my blog.

Election Year Blues

Election Year Blues

This is nuts!
No ands or buts.

Change is brewing,
voters stewing.

Economic crunch,
most of the bunch
Half-Baked choices,
crazy voices.

Urban jumble
about to crumble.

The Yellow Brick Road
Soon to erode.

A Dastardly Mash
of rich guys’ cash
Make Rocky Roads
of mother lodes.

Cool Britannia
wins the day

as the rest of Earth
Just melts away!

Night Terror

Night Terror

The circuits were all overcharged the night that one livewire
crossed another, triggering an electrical fire.
It was approximately midnight when I brutally awoke,
avulsed from bed and blanket by the acrid plumes of smoke.
Reeling from my dreamworld, plunged into reality,
Suffering from vertigo, I attempted to flee.
Gathered in my father’s arms, comforted by his grasping,
I was rushed into the cool night air, coughing, choking, gasping.
Our neighbors gathered all around to comfort and to gape—
to give thanks with our family for our safe escape.
Fire whistles shrilling their approaching welcome scream,
I was jerked awake once more from that childhood dream.
And even though I knew those terrors were all in my head,
I padded down the hallway into my parents’ bed.

Prompts today are livewire, approximately, brutal, avulse, overcharge and vertigo.

Weekend Regression: Prompts, July 25, 2022

Weekend Regression

On Friday night I imbibe ’till I’m jolly,
but such jubilation I’ve found is sheer folly.
Infatuated with letting off steam,
I raise up a glass with the rest of the team.

After Saturday night I have energy left,
but by Sunday night I’m worn out and bereft.
Weekends are fun-filled and rowdy and timeless,
but by their end we are blown-out and dimeless.

I realize this statement is rather reductive,
but weekends, I’ve found, are counterproductive.
Monday mornings I’m frowzy, Tuesday, not much better,
not ’till Wednesday or Thursday in finer fetter.

Ready to gear up for more Friday fun,
and a whole weekend in which to run
reckless and feckless and feeling the perks
of two whole days in which nobody works!!!!

Prompts today are.: left, infatuated, sheer, counterproductive, timeless, frowzy,

Moonlight Reflection: Wordle 562

Moonlight Reflection

The radiant moon invites me to meander to the pool.
To miss its cloud-scrimmed drama would reveal me as a fool.
Its flickering light reflected in the pool’s steaming glass,
I part its even surface asunder as I pass.

Clothed in liquid light, I walk a smooth straight line,
reflectively immersed in this world that is all mine.
I have no other idol except this ghost of moon.
I feel that I could taste it if I only had a spoon.

Its taste would be ambrosial upon my earthly tongue—
the first to taste a lunar menu formerly unsung.
I bundle up my prayers and toss them overhead,
leaving all my worries unthought of and unsaid.

The stone steps lead me up again from its steaming mass
and I shed off moonlight around me as I pass.
I take its memory with me as I return to bed,
the splendor of the moonlight forever in my head.

Today’s prompt words are: reflective radiant immersed meander idol  line taste drama ghost  flickering stone. The photos I took two weeks ago before leaving my house to travel to the states for my school reunion. A glorious scene. One of the shots is the moon and trees reflected in the surface of my  pool that is fed by  hot mineral springs that pass through the  magma layer fed by the Colima Volcano, 80 miles away. I swim in it almost nightly.

Reality Redefined

Reality Redefined

(From Reality Shows to Reality Politicians, the meaning

of the word seems to have shifted to its opposite.)

Your underwhelming comments on my photographs should shame me,
but if they foster apathy, you really cannot blame me.
Timeless snapshots can’t be made of subjects that are boring,
and ordinary truth, it seems, leaves viewers merely snoring.

“What seems to be” has turned into the new truth that we seek—
reality  becoming something we can tweak.
A pantomimed emotion, sadly, I must confess,

if one is good enough at it, is good enough, I guess.

So bring on the kitschy actor, the reality show clown.
Their entertainment value will bring them wide renown.

They are what is called for in this modern cyber world.
“Reality’s” new meaning therein has been unfurled.

Prompt words are snapshot, underwhelming, timeless, kitschyfoster and pantomime.

Quilted Flowers: FOTD July 24, 2022

A few days ago I showed Quilled Flowers. Today I’m showing Quilted ones. This gorgeous quilt was hanging in my doctor’s office in Sheridan, Wyoming. It was quilted by the receptionist in the office and is even more beautiful and detailed in person than in this photo.
