These pictures were taken on Mezcala Island, where “from 1812 to 1816, a small band of Mexican rebels or insurgents on the island held off the Spanish army and navy against overwhelming odds. Tired of the humiliation, the Spanish finally negotiated a peaceful surrender with the insurgents. Later the island served as a Spanish prison for many years. There is a Ceremonial precinct where indigenous structures and hieroglyphics existed on the island before the fortifications were built.” ***

Traces of these sites still remain. Now it is a popular tourist spot in Lake Chapala.  This little lady seems to have declared herself in charge.

I messed up on this one big time.  First, after going through six years of photos on my Mac Photos file to make a list of these examples of hot or cold drinks,  I got them all entered in my blog and when I tried to remove one, I erased them all—losing a good hour of work it took me to locate them in my WP media file.  Then I decided to just enter them all again, since I had a list of them, and when I finished I realized that this was a black and white challenge.  Maybe I need to retire.  Anyway, back to the drawing board.  I’m going to go ahead and post this one and then go back and convert them all to black and white to enter into Cee’s challenge.

Twenty-seven minutes later: I’ve converted all the photos to black and white and reposted for Cee’s Black and White challenge, so if you are curious about how these would all look in black and white, HERE is the other version.

I couldn’t find a photo of one of my favorite houses when I did my first post, so I have to publish an addendum to my “Places People Live.” This is the house of my friend Candace, who loves color, as I do, and her husband Bob.  I’ve now added it to the collage, but for those of you who have already seen my earlier post, here is another wonderful place where wonderful people live, and HERE is the original post of all of the houses.

The Rest of the Trip to Big Spring

After a long drive, we were finally approaching Big Spring, one of the largest natural springs in the world, with an outpouring large enough to fill a baseball stadium overnight.
This is where we were headed,
And we were almost there, when alas,
this is the bad news we were greeted with.
and after another long winding drive through the beauties of the Ozarks,
success!!!
As well as evidence of the reason for our detour.
Finally, the gorgeous turquoise waters of Big Spring and Little Spring, which together bubble out of the rocks to join to the Current River.
The beauty of the surrounds, coupled with the vivid turquoise of the water is spellbinding.
Watercress abounds,
as do other aquatic plants.
Although it is forbidden, obviously someone couldn’t resist the temptation to wade in the cold pristine water.
It wasn’t forgottenman, though. Here seen in a reflective mood.
Then we took this sidewalk to nowhere
and discovered this neglected playground.
Forgottenman couldn’t resist those steps up to the top.
Nor could he resist the long ride down.
such as this cache of acorns,
a lush undergrowth of moss and ferns,
as well as mistletoe
and, finally, this leaf seemingly surrounded by jewels
After an hour or so, we said good bye to Big Spring.
On our ride out, the roadside was set aflame as we rode off to new adventures.
Tomorrow, it’s off to Des Moines!
