Sensory Memory: Sunday Writing Prompt, Jan 6, 2019

Sensory Memory

The scent of stale patchouli stains your memory
as I inspect the photograph of the “you and me”
we thought would be together for a longer time
than that too-short interval tinged with bitter lime.

The shadow of your rising star occasionally lingers.
The keys on my piano bear the ash gray of your fingers.
The circle of your wine spill still tattoos my divan.
I hoard it like an autograph—your long-forgotten fan.

The words I chose from each classification are: divan, piano, bitter lime, ash gray, patchouli, circle, star, photograph

A girl can get accustomed to anything in time, even a family of squirrels moving into her new hairdo.  Mama, papa and baby.  Now abuela, as well.

Home is the Sailor

Home is the Sailor

Homecomings call for clemency and memory that is short,
for when a sailor comes back home to his favorite port,
he doesn’t like returning to atone for past mistakes.
He’d rather do his penance for the new ones that he makes.

This isn’t any riddle, no mystery is involved.
It’s simply that some other bad habits  have evolved.
He finds he cannot take the time to mend what he’s forgotten
when he has so many other newer habits ill-begotten.

The prompt words today are homecoming, clemency and riddle.

The Monarch of Dogs

The Monarch of Dogs

Morrie is the underdog. Diego’s top dog now.
Does one find this jockeying with horse or pig or cow?

Why does there need to be a boss now dogs don’t roam in packs?
I fear dog organization sound logic sadly lacks.

I am the queen of doggiedom in my house. There’s no need
for a boss of dogs to calculate their every deed.

Their kibble comes in cans and bags. Nobody needs to know
How to be the chieftain in bringing down a doe.

Perhaps they need a barking order as a way to tell
whose loud barking will predict the ring of the doorbell.

Perhaps they need to show me who deserves the premier pat
or the biggest food dish, or bone with the most fat.

And yet I love them both the same, in spite of any wishes.
I pat them equally and put their bones in equal dishes!

The Monarch of Plastic: Jan 5, 2019

 The Monarch of Plastic

We’re up against the wall, now—climbing, scratching, pawing,
as behind us in the ice, monsters are quickly thawing.
We have great gratitude for life and all the joys it brings,
but now we have to pay the price for all our pretty things.
Those lovely cars that speed us on toward our various pleasures
now ask their price in taking from us other dearer treasures.—
Breath and water we might drink and swim in with no thought—
those departing natural things our pretty toys have bought.
Plastic for our jar tops, plastic for our carrying,
pretty soon this plastic will be handy for our burying.
In the hilltops safe above our ocean’s spreading grasp,
the king of plastic sits surveying his world’s parting gasp.
Still he does not worry, for he feels safe on his throne.
unaware that one day he’ll enjoy this world alone.

The prompts today are wall, gratitude and thawing

What Was So Funny?

Our birding trip through the lagoons near La Manzanilla yielded more laughs than birds. For Rachel and Gloria, who had never made the trip before, the hour and a half long trip down the mangrove swamps yielded more surprises than I had counted on.
