Trump’s Bone Spurs Act Up At West Point.

You’ve probably all seen these Stephen Colbert episodes, but just in case, I’m making it easy to do so. I heard Alice Walker speak at the beginning of Trump’s reign and she gave us ten ways to survive the Trump years. The last one was to get all of your political news from comedians. These are great examples. One more coming up.

How to Avoid Spreading Fake News

This is a great primer on how to check out information before sharing it. It starts out talking about a program to teach kids how to do so but then goes on to give great advice on where to go to check out stories before we repost them. We all need to learn how to do this. It includes easy ways to check out what the real source is of a story, how to learn which sites are just impersonating valid news sites, how to use reverse Google photo searches and a list of the four best sites to go to to fact check: Snopes, factcheck.com and politifact–as well as Wikipedia to check out background information before using one of the other sites. This video is a bit long but contains really valuable information all in one spot.  Take notes and tape them to your desk or device. Help stop fake news and propaganda in its tracks!!!

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

I was almost mature, I was almost thin.
Now I must start all over again.
So please have compassion. Eat your own surprise.
Don’t bring me donuts or candy or pies.

I’m redoing my fridge and throwing out naughties
homemade by friends as well as my boughties.
Ice cream and truffles go straight in the bin,
for I must amend this shape I am in.

I’ll begin my diet as soon as I’m able,
pushing myself away from the table
as soon as banana bread I baked last night
has been depleted to nary a bite.

Then I’ll eat salads and green beans and stuff.
Doing without sugar will not be so tough
tomorrow. I’ll begin tomorrow, I vow.
Tomorrow works out so much better than now.

Prompt words today are almost, mature, ready, compassion and organization.

Poised

Poised

My past retreats in the rear vision mirror
while in the windshield the future draws nearer.
Gliding along, sometimes I go slow,
fearing what the future will choose to bestow.
Ahead a small cove offers shelter from stress:
security, housing and a wedding dress.
But if I veer off and drive over the hill,
I may never stop again until, until—
I’ve encountered adventure like stories I’ve read
while curled up in the hammock or lying in bed.
All of those lives there lined up on a shelf,
each one revealing a part of myself.
One eye trained behind me and one on the highway,
will I choose the known road or opt for a byway?

Prompts today are rear vision mirrorglidebestowcove and housing.

Crystal and Amber

Crystal and Amber
(For Anmol)

Angel, wherever you fly, may you have a charmed life.
May the scroll of your life coil without kink,
your totems protect you from the cruel wrinkles of life
and those unenlightened creatures who inhabit them.

May you be you without subterfuge.
May you expose your polka dots, no matter how flamboyant.
May the keys you possess open the doors where you want to go
and the scent of your spirit waft out on a welcome breeze.

What is key in you—let it write your story,
and let the stone you were born to guide your way.
Patience. Wisdom. Balance.
Bring to the world what it needs more of.

The part of the world that knows it needs you
prays to whatever God it can believe in
that you be met with
an open hand.

I wrote this poem using the symbolism of this necklace that I made a few years ago. It was written in response to Anmol’s prompt which invites us to write a poem about pride, gender fluidity, sexuality, protest, et al. or to write about the continuing fight for equality and the realization of the aspirations of the marginalised communities. For dVerse Poets
