Small Fry

Small Fry

We were small fry in a grown up world,
our dresses starched, our hair tight-curled
on a candlestick by mothers
who scrubbed the faces of small brothers
with fingers they had spit upon
to purge the dirt they’d lit upon.

We had no choice in any of this.
Nor in the neighbor lady’s kiss.
Sour and moldy though she might smell,
we pretended we loved it well.
So went the life in days gone by
so long as you were just small fry.

Now children pose for selfies and diss
the thought of an old lady’s kiss.
They refuse to  run through traces.
Don’t allow spit-scrubbed-at faces.
Skirts go unstarched, hair goes uncurled
now that children rule the world!

Fry is the WP prompt today.

Kids and Dogs. A Fine Match!!!

Morrie had a wonderful time on the beach yesterday with these three enthusiastic playmates and for once I had two hands free to snap photos.  And in case you wonder, no that little girl isn’t holding him by the tail!!

These are priceless, so please click on first one so you can see them all enlarged in a slideshow. Some of them made need a few seconds to come into focus.  Be patient.

These photos are for the WordPress prompt A Good Match.

Made by Human Beings, for sure!!!

Recognition

Filthy little urchin, dirty little boy—
who could tell from looking that you’d be such a joy?
We never would have chosen you by following our nose,
but when we scraped the dirt off and laundered all your clothes,
we recognized you as our own, devoid of dirt and grime,
and now that you are  family and with us all the time,
mud puddles still attract you. Dirt piles call your name.
But now it doesn’t matter. We love you all the same.

Rare Bird

My gardener’s youngest son Ishmael is a rare bird. First of all, he’s rarely seen, as he is extremely shy. He has also in the past been frightened of my dogs, me, all of the kids at school, his teacher and anyone who isn’t a parent or brother. Over the past year, I’ve been trying to curry his favor with coloring books, toys, balls to throw for the dog and most recently, an Easter Egg hunt that involved both candy and toys.  At first he was shy, hiding behind his parents, but by the end of the time he was here he was rushing around the front garden trying to fill his basket. These photos record some former times, including his first approach to Diego–a very rare occasion! (Click to enlarge photos.)

The photo prompt this week was “Rare.”

The Princess and the Frog Prince––Cee’s Oddball Challenge, May 8, 2016

Although he looks like he’d rather be anyplace but here, his hand was actually the first one that shot up when the teacher asked who would like to run for king.  Five years later, he is taller than his mom… and almost as tall as I am.  Sweet Oscar.  Wonder what he’d think of those blue satin knee pants now???

Here is a picture taken two days ago.  It is of Oscar, his dad Pablo, his mom Yolanda, sister Yoli and me, aboard the pontoon boat Batur for a fundraising concert to send a San Juan Cosala girl to music camp in Huntsville, Alabama.  First time anyone in the family had been on the lake, in spite of the fact that they were all born here.  Yoli was thrilled!  More photos to follow. I look frazzled.  I was!  Oscar has changed from being a frog prince to a bat man!

Yoli’s Baby: Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge

Yoli is my housekeeper’s adorable little girl.  She loves to sing but even more, she loves her new puppy who is named Brian, after a character in a racing movie that was played by Paul Newman.  Because she is crazy about cars, she is also crazy about Paul Newman.  Funny, for a little Mexican girl, but who can blame her?  I always was, too.  Here are some shots of her and her new little Chihuahua, Brian!!

Friends

Friends

(When I walked the Ajijic malecon with three good friends yesterday, I came across these friends frolicking in the lake slightly below us.  They were having such a glorious time and I identified completely, since all the swimming I did prior to my twenties was in stock dams (and occasionally the river) back in South Dakota. I have no better memories of childhood and I’m sure these children will feel the same way.  A little water to splash in, something to investigate along the way, sun and your friends––what more is needed for a perfect day?

(Click on first photo and then on arrows to see full-sized photos.)

I’ve done so many posts on the subject of friendship–at least five in the past year, but please go HERE to see a post I made two years ago that most of you probably haven’t seen before.

Color Your World: Beaver

Color Your World: Beaver             1024x768-beaver-solid-color-background.jpg

Back in the late fifties, my folks  built a new house a block away from our old one.  A modern ranch style, it was built on a small hill so the foundation of our house was level with the roof line of the house behind us.  My dad built a wooden walkway and porch that gave us access to our kitchen and basement entry from the garage on the other side of the house.  Underneath this walkway, which was up on very high supports, was a dirt  incline that was almost irresistible to the neighborhood kids–especially when it rained.  One day, as I stood at the kitchen sink doing dishes, I turned off the water but could still hear water running.  I went out on the back porch, looked down and saw this sight.  It was our little neighbor from across the street, Kenny Palmer, who had discovered the garden hose, turned it on, and created a wonderful mud party for himself.  Good photo opportunity. Would that I had had my present camera.  I would have taken twenty shots to this one and perhaps have achieved one a bit less fuzzy.IMG_0006
