Squirreled Splendor

Squirreled Splendor

Why this crazy diadem so intimately curled?
How quizzical you’ve seen it fit to be completely squirreled.
If I decide to follow suit to don a furry coif,
will you claim a copyright and make me take it off?

Prompt words today are decide, diadem,  copyright, quizzical,

Miss Malaprop

Miss Malaprop

A nubile young maiden, inchoately malleable
needs some instruction to stay out of trouble.
Her mother has warned against malaprop gaffes,
which in her innocence, she calls “giraffes.”
So if you are seeking to be this girl’s savior,
in adducing reasons for proper behavior,
keep your words simple and don’t try to teach
difficult words that are out of her reach!

Prompt words today are inchoate, malleable, nubile, adduce and gaffe. Image by Sherise on Unsplash.

Stop and Go

Stop and Go

Consider the ramifications
of an excess of libations.
You can kiss but you can’t hug
the frothy lip of a bar mug.
It takes a bit of nerve and spine
to veer off course, to forsake wine
and face the angst of barroom gents
in favor of family events.
Hats off to drinking men who know
The proper time to stop and go!

Prompt words today are ramifications, angst,  veer, spine and hug,

The Divine Supine

The Divine Supine

A chunk of ham, a pint of beans,

a glass of wine, some magazines,
an afternoon stretched out supine,
a hearty meal on which to dine.
No serious tasks to stir and pique,
No work to do. No goal to seek.
“Pronto” not an adverb you’re
likely to hear to make you stir.
Lazy days and lazy nights
are what set the world to rights.

Prompt words today are chunk, pronto, pique, supine and serious.

Wishy-Washy

Wishy-Washy

Simple pleasures lack that “Gosh!”
that goes with habits much more posh,
so I renounce such simple things
in favor of what richness brings.
If your response to what I choose
includes recital of what I’ll lose:
sunsets, laughter, hand-held walks,
peanut butter and midnight talks,
then perhaps I’ll change my mind
for pleasures of a simpler kind.

Prompt words today are simple pleasures, renounce, posh, recital and response.

Grandpa Discovers Virtual Reality

Grandpa Discovers Virtual Reality

I’ve been over yonder and frankly I’m perplexed
about how all the young ‘uns seem to be so under-sexed.
Virtual reality makes real-time life a bore.
Why bother with reality when you can live on lore?

Real life takes some gumption but virtual life’s a snap.
Who needs real love with Kim Kardashian upon your lap?
It seems that in the future perhaps all folks will live thusly,
sitting watching screens to live their lives vicariously.

Prompt words are perplexed, vicariously, frankly, yonder and snap. Image by Lucrezia Carnelos on Unsplash.

Hot Wax, Cold Water

Hot Wax, Cold Water

He who seeks to dip his wick
should study well which girl to pick.
She was a candlemaker’s daughter,
who lived by what her father taught her,
and though he wooed and thought he’d caught her,
melted wax that meets cold water
floats on top and forms a crust
quickly quenching any lust.

If he seeks to woo and win her,
it will take much more than dinner,
pop of cork and candlelight.
A match, a sip and then a bite
are not sufficient to win a dame
accustomed to a candle’s flame.
He’d do much better if at the start

he had sought to melt her heart.

A Suitable Ending

A Suitable Ending

He made a wild adventure out of every act
as his imagination embellished every fact.
No detail insignificant in his lackluster life,
his tall tales irked his children and perplexed his wife.
Each plash became a tidal wave. Trips to the zoo were germinal—
fomenting tales of tigers on safaris nearly terminal.
His day would come, they warned him, but he was a stubborn bloke.
He thrived on spinning yarns  and on concocting his next joke.
They always said they’d do him in—those wild tales he spun.
And in the end, his kin were right. He choked on a bad pun.

Prompts today are tiger, insignificant, perplex, plash and terminal.

Clown Face

Clown Face

The majority of children, in fact every kid in town
would drop everything they’re doing to get painted by a clown.
In his coat of many colors and his distinctive rubber nose,
his ruffled baggy pants and his other funny clothes,
he’s bound to probe your funny bone and catch you in a smile.
He’ll paint your face like his if you’ll stand quiet for awhile,
and then the whole best part of it is up and down the street,
every door you knock on will provide you with a treat!!!!

Prompts for today are coat, probe, majority, distinct and drop.

Tofurky Asafoetida Blues

Tofurky Asafoetida Blues

My brother’s new wife has the whole family curious.
Her allegations seem New-Age and spurious.
With the result that grandma is furious.

She turns family gatherings into a podium
where she expounds on the dangers of sodium.
Meanwhile, the whole family is on Imodium .

Off to the bathroom, each one in a hurry
after imbibing in her saltless curry.
Will grandpa recover? We all share the worry.

Her asafoetida and cumin and dahl
have certainly cast an ominous pall.
We hardly enjoy family dinners at all!

She stuffs us with pita and gags us with bulgur
because she thinks regular rice is just vulgar.

But macrobiotic and Christmas don’t mix.
We miss all the old foods she’s certain to nix.

No turkey, no dressing, no cranberry sauce.
And no Christmas pudding, ’cause she is the boss!

For years, family dinners went by with no glitch,
but not so since bro married this tedious bitch.

So Santa, this year it would be very pleasant
if you gave us all just one communal present.

Please, Santa, deliver us from her tofurkey
and restore us to pudding and dressing and turkey!!!

Note: Asafoetida is a strong spice with a pungent smell, often used in Indian cuisine. It has been known to cause burping, farting and swelled lips.

Words of the day are ditch, insist , spurious, vulgar and sodium.
