Painting Outside the Lines

Painting Outside the Lines

Our lives are made, by end of day
with rules we choose to disobey—
those pathways we choose to walk down
to find a different part of town.
Strange roads to new territory
that make the ending of our story
one unplanned, our life replotted.
All carefully scribed plans now blotted
out, with new ones wildly scribbled
in new colors brash and ribald—
breaking rules carefully set
for new patterns you won’t regret,
making our lives messier,
more “maybe” and less “yessier.”
Every rigid rule undone
might simply make our lives more fun.

The prompt today was disobey.

For Cee’s Flower Prompt.

Chapala Sunset

Everyone keeps asking if the earthquake and hurricane had any effect on our weather here.  I can’t notice that it has, other than a week of rain during earlier hurricanes and tropical storms last week, but this sunset two nights ago is perhaps the result, somehow, of bad weather farther away. I have not augmented the colors. They were really this brilliant!!! These photos were taken over a 15 to 20 minute time period from my deck.

Kittens as Blanket

This is okcforgottenman posting for Judy. Her electricity has been off for hours now, but she was able to use her iPhone and Kindle to send me these photos along with an explanation. The rest is Judy, from her own Skype texts. (As always, you can click on the photos to enlarge them.)

The girls were all girlcatting it around outside when I lay down on the sofa. Only Ollie, the boy, was asleep on the arm of the divan, all tangled up in my hair as usual with him. I woke up after a 3-hour unplanned nap. I guess the girls found mama after I fell asleep and just piled on. When I woke up, they were covering about all of me, but Ollie was on my chair by desk. No electricity – beeping of the UPS is what awakened me. About out of juice now on phone and computer (still no electricity) so gotta be faaaast. I had been listening to a book on my Kindle when I fell asleep, and suddenly realized it had a camera on it, so I learned how to use my Kindle to take photos and how to send them to my computer, all while lying under a cat blanket! The book finished while I was sleeping, by the way. Wonder if it entered my dreams. I’ll have to rewind it. I love it that I’m just the bottom cat in the pile. And so funny that the boy cat went over and slept alone on my chair instead of joining in.

Rules of Engagement

There are times when two people need to walk away from each other,
but there is no rule that says they have to turn around and fire. ––Robert Breault

This is another zinger from my friend Georgia, who sends us a quote a day.  Had to share this one as well as the one I shared yesterday. jdbphoto

Driven: dVerse Poets Open Link Night

Driven

They’re always back there in my head––
the things I could have said instead.
Sometimes not voiced for a reply,
but just existing in my mind’s eye.
Words joined in ranks turn there about
wondering how they’ll get out.
Before they start to riot and rage,
I let them out of their bone cage.

The voices murmur and they chide.
Cause trouble if they’re locked inside.
What if the mad men of this world––
in asylums cruelly hurled––
are simply writers who don’t know it.
Wild voice inside. No place to stow it.
All those entities inside
taught that they must try to hide.

Perhaps if they could let them out
to prance and scamper, whine and shout
on paper––empty, white and thin––
it would be the simplest medicine.
To fill the paper the surest way
to bring tortured voices to light of day.
To join that strange fraternity
Of those who have to speak to see.

What drives us to this room, alone,
our lives austere as any bone?
Is it the voices there inside us,
barely able to abide us,
needing to be wider heard?
To keep them in would be absurd.
I let them out for exhibition.
Free them from their cramped perdition.

And as I drift off into sleep,
I am the company they keep.
I hear their whisperings faint but clear
as they march in ranks from ear to ear.
Words rolling out in countless reams
fill my empty chambers with dreams.
When I awaken, they break their order,
wild to escape this nightly hoarder.

They jostle, elbow, push and squeeze
to make their way onto these keys.
I can barely match their pace
as they stream out, caught in the race
to be the next to flee my head
in their mad stampede to be said.
I don’t control these words, you see.
I am their transport. They drive me.

That Flower, That Tree: (Flowering Schefflera Tree) Sunday Trees and Flower of the Day, Sep 9, 2017

I’ve been trying to get a good shot of this tree for sixteen years, but it grows so huge that it’s impossible to get a good closeup  shot of the blooms while getting the entire tree as well.  A few months ago, I did a shoot of different stages of the flowers on a bush-sized tree at a local car wash, but a few days ago I noticed that it was in full bloom and at a perfect stage and size to capture the entire tree.  Recently, I also  found out the name of this tree after years of inquiry—the flowering Schefflera or Octopus Tree.

After the Honeymoon

The bride’s exhausted. The groom is numb.
I think that they have overcome.

The prompt today is overcome.

On Aging

“Say what you will about aging, it’s still the only way to have old friends.”

Thanks, Georgia, for sharing the above quote with me. Love it.
